What’s Wrong With Krypto In The Supergirl Trailer?

What’s Wrong With Krypto In The Supergirl Trailer?

Supergirl‘s trailer teases that something is wrong with Krypto in the DCU movie’s story – raising questions that appear to be answered by DC’s comics. As the second movie in the DCU timeline, Supergirl has a lot to accomplish as a movie, especially since its story is set to take us into the DCU’s cosmos.

While the story of Supergirl will no doubt expand the DCU more than ever before, the release crucially will also further the personal stories and arcs of Supergirl herself and beloved canine Krypto, who were both introduced in Superman. As such, the path ahead looks to have challenges and trials for this duo, too, as is directly teased by the way the Supergirl trailer handles Krypto.

Supergirl’s Comic Source Material Explains What’s Wrong With Krypto In The DCU Movie’s Trailer

The main source of comic inspiration for the DCU’s Supergirl movie – that of DC comic Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow – appears to preemptively explain a notable scene within the Supergirl trailer wherein a tearful Kara pets an ill-looking Krypto.

In Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, Krypto is poisoned by an arrow fired by central villain Krem of the Yellow Hills, which harms the dog more because he’s hit with it on a planet with a red sun, which weakens he and Supergirl’s powers.

This kicks off the main plot of the comic, with Supergirl telling the series’ other main character, Ruthye, that they need to hunt down Krem so she can retrieve a sample of the poison in order for a cure to be made for the dying Krypto – an arrangement Ruthye agrees to, as she’s after Krem because he killed her father.

As such, Supergirl‘s trailer scenes suggest the movie is using this storyline for its own plot, and that Krypto looking unwell and Kara looking emotional are early teases of this part of the film’s story.

Anyone worried about Krypto and his fate in the Supergirl movie can rest assured that the source material the film is drawing from sees the beloved super-dog make a full recovery, suggesting the DCU’s Krypto will do the same – unless a very cruel plot adjustment is made for the 2026 DC release.

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow’s comic story reveals in the final leg of its run that Supergirl didn’t need a sample of Krem’s poison to have a cure made for Krypto. Instead, the dog has simply been away healing this whole time, having not quite been in the mortal peril that the Kryptonian initially described to Ruthye, which was a ruse so Supergirl could try and help Ruthye work through her desire for vengeance.

With this being one of the most interesting – and most emotional – plot twists in the series, it’ll be interesting to see if the Supergirl movie also adapts this element of the story, or if the film decides to instead have Krypto be in true peril throughout its plot. Either way, the Supergirl trailer makes it seem clear that this part of the original narrative will be making its way into the DCU shortly.
