Tom Selleck Planning Big TV Return After ‘Blue Bloods’ Exit

Tom Selleck is an actor with a long and storied career. With Blue Bloods finishing its run in 2024, many fans are wondering what’s next for the star. However, an inside source recently shared some insight on Selleck’s possible television return.

Tom Selleck Has Brought Many Characters To Life, From Thomas Magnum To Frank Reagan

For many, Selleck’s breakout role for many was playing Thomas Magnum on Magnum, P.I. from 1980 to 1988. In 2005, he also became known for playing Jesse Stone in nine television films based on Robert B. Parker’s novels.

One of his longest-running roles, however, was playing New York City Police Commissioner Frank Reagan on Blue Bloods. He played the character from 2010 to 2024.

With Blue Bloods‘ series finale airing on December 13, 2024, fans have been wondering what’s next for Selleck. According to an inside source, with so many successful shows under his belt, the actor might be on the lookout for his next big project.

Speaking with The National Enquirer, the source shared Selleck is currently “turning his whole world upside down” to prove he can star in his next big show. According to them, even as long as the show ran, Selleck might have still wanted to play Commissioner Reagan even longer.

As the source continued, “Blue Bloods went away before Tom was ready to say goodbye and it’s not a great feeling for him to see his former co-stars thrive on the cheaper spinoff.” This was in reference to the spin-off, Boston Blue, which sees Donnie Wahlberg reprise his role as Danny Reagan.

The source also noted, “To show the industry that he wants to stay in the game, Tom left his longtime agency representation.” This had previously been confirmed by Deadline in early December.

An Insider Shared That It Could Be ‘An Pphill Battle Ahead’ For Selleck

Previously, an insider spoke with the outlet about Selleck’s health. At the time, it was shared, “All the junk food and lack of exercise had caught up to him. Over time, Tom cut back on the fast food. He’s been exercising and doing physical therapy.”

The source believed that this reflected Selleck’s desire to land his next big role. They noted, “Perception matters and Tom still wants to be perceived as a bankable leading man, no matter how old he is. He still totally believes in himself.”

That said, the source believes this is easier said than done. They noted, “Tom is still conducting business like it’s 1985, not 2025. No matter how famous he is or how many millions of retirement-age fans he has, landing the lead role in a TV series is harder than ever.”

“It’s a process that favors new faces, not people like Tom who have been very famous for decades and decades. He’s got an uphill battle ahead of him to get back on TV.”

As previously reported, Selleck has also shared with fans over what he wanted to do following Blue Bloods last year. Speaking with Parade, he noted, “A good Western’s always on my list. I miss that; I want to sit on a horse again.” He also shared an interest in doing more Jesse Stone movies at the time.

Do you think fans will see Tom Selleck take on his next big role soon? Have you been following this story? What is your reaction to the insider’s claims? Make sure you come back to TV Shows Ace for all the latest TV and celebrity news.
