Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis is one of the first blockbuster remakes we’ll be receiving in 2027, and it’s incredibly exciting to see that it’ll be continuing the legacy of both the classic Tomb Raider games and the Survivor prequel trilogy that officially precedes Tomb Raider 1 in the lore. This way, unlike ordinary remakes that modernize and reimagine their original counterparts, Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis is a sequel as much as it is a remake.
Interestingly, Tomb Raider: Catalyst’s slated release window for 2027 has yet to be pushed back following the announcement of Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis’ release date, suggesting that two landmark Tomb Raider games might be launching next year. No Tomb Raider fans would be against this, surely, and fans are also quite hopeful that the Tomb Raider franchise’s new era takes a page out of Resident Evil’s book when it comes to its approach to game releases from here on out.
In 2019, Resident Evil struck gold with a newfound release schedule of alternating mainline games and remakes, starting with Resident Evil 2. This strategy has proven to be wildly successful, as Capcom has been able to develop Resident Evil 7: biohazard, Resident Evil Village, and Resident Evil Requiem alongside remakes of Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 3, and Resident Evil 4, with Resident Evil Veronica announced at Summer Game Fest 2026.
There’s seemingly always a new Resident Evil game around the corner as a result, and the Resident Evil 3 remake being the only game in the franchise to be less than superb in the last decade is a testament to the games’ excellence. Across Twitter/X, fans are acknowledging how the Tomb Raider franchise is in the perfect position to adopt an identical release schedule, going back and forth between exploring new mainline entries and revisiting the rest of the original games once Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis and Tomb Raider: Catalyst launch.
Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis will be the franchise’s second remake of Tomb Raider 1. However, user indigo_15 believes that “Tomb Raider deserves the same remake treatment that other franchises are enjoying.” User JadenOfAtlantis is in agreement: “I’m feeling more and more confident that this will all be the beginning of a Resident Evil route of remakes and brand-new Tomb Raider games releasing alongside one another.”
With six classic games and the LAU sequel trilogy that it could remake (minus Tomb Raider: Anniversary, since Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis fulfills its role in the series now), there are certainly enough games in the franchise that Crystal Dynamics could spend decades remaking them and release brand-new titles in between.
Plus, after it reaches Tomb Raider: Underworld, it wouldn’t be surprising at all to see an announcement for remakes of Tomb Raider’s Survivor prequel trilogy games—Tomb Raider (2013), Rise of the Tomb Raider, and Shadow of the Tomb Raider—in the future, and this could all begin with Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis as a humble kernel.
