When the temperatures start to drop, my creativity in the closet does, too. Suddenly, getting dressed becomes a daily exercise in pairing whatever jeans are clean with whichever sweater is closest to the front of my closet. There’s nothing wrong with a good jeans-and-sweater uniform, but after a few weeks of the same formula, I start to miss the fun of getting dressed. Enter: fall capsule wardrobe colors.

I’m pushing back on the idea that a fall capsule wardrobe has to be made up of black, gray, beige, and navy. A capsule wardrobe is actually about versatility, not neutrality. If the colors in your closet work together, a bright sweater or colorful coat can be just as wearable as another neutral. And this fall, there are plenty of unexpected shades to choose from. Here’s how I’m incorporating this year’s fall capsule wardrobe colors and trends into a closet that still feels timeless.

Fall Capsule Wardrobe Colors to Try in 2026

This season, the runway is embracing color in a big way. Of course, traditional fall capsule wardrobe colors like chocolate brown, olive, and burgundy aren’t going anywhere, but designers are also leaning into brighter, more unexpected colors and combinations. The good news? You don’t have to overhaul your closet to get in on the trend.

The key is all in the styling. Colors that might feel decidedly summery on their own can take on a whole new personality when paired with fall denim, ecru, chocolate brown, black, or other rich fall shades.

    Electric Blue

Think of electric blue as navy’s more playful younger sister. This brighter shade is showing up everywhere, from sporty nylon jackets to knitwear, and it’s surprisingly easy to work into a fall wardrobe thanks to its natural affinity for denim. Treat electric blue like you would navy—pair it with denim, ecru, chocolate brown, or black for maximum versatility.

For a fall capsule wardrobe with color, look for a sweater or jacket that can be layered with pieces you already own. Or, if you’re not ready to commit to a statement piece, a bright blue bag is an easy way to add a pop of color to your everyday outfits.

    Purple: Bright & Plum

Purple is having a major moment for this fall, from saturated royal purple to deep, moody plum. While bright purple makes a statement, plum can act almost like a neutral—and makes a particularly chic alternative to your usual black or brown.

Because purple feels a little more trend-forward than some of the other colors on this list, accessories are an easy way to experiment. Think plum loafers, a belt, handbag, or beaded necklace. If you love the color, a plum sweater is another surprisingly versatile investment.

    Butter Yellow

You may be rolling your eyes at seeing butter yellow on yet another trending color list, but there’s a reason this shade keeps coming back: It’s incredibly easy to wear. While traditionally associated with spring and summer, butter yellow feels surprisingly fresh for fall when paired with warm whites and rich browns.

Try a butter yellow sweater with a white tee, ecru jeans, and chocolate-brown suede accessories for a look that feels colorful without sacrificing versatility. The trick is grounding the softer shade with the warmer tones already living in your fall capsule wardrobe.

    Turquoise

If you added turquoise to your wardrobe rotation when it peaked this summer, you’re in luck—it’s sticking around for fall. But instead of pairing it with bright oranges and greens, this season calls for richer, more unexpected combinations.

Chocolate brown, olive green, and burgundy instantly give turquoise a more autumnal feel. I especially love using it for color-blocking: a turquoise sweater with burgundy pants feels unexpected, but still polished. The styling is what gives the color its context.

    Red: Cherry & Burgundy

Red is one of those colors that will never really go out of style, making it one of my favorite fall capsule wardrobe colors to invest in. This season, we’re seeing everything from bright cherry to deep burgundy, so there’s a version for every comfort level.

Whether it’s a statement coat, burgundy loafers, or a cherry cashmere sweater, red has the rare ability to be both a statement and a staple. If you’re going to add one bold color to your capsule wardrobe, this is a safe bet.

5 Outfit Formulas for Styling Fall Capsule Wardrobe Colors

Knowing which colors are trending is one thing; knowing how to actually incorporate them into a timeless, versatile capsule wardrobe is another. These easy outfit formulas show exactly how to style the pieces above with your existing fall capsule wardrobe.

    1. The Vintage Denim + V-Neck Sweater

Your favorite vintage jeans plus a colorful V-neck sweater is perhaps the easiest way to bring fall’s trending colors into your everyday wardrobe. Layer over a white tee and add a classic trench to balance the brightness.

    2. The Neutral Outfit + Statement Bag

The lowest-commitment way to experiment with color? Accessories. Let a colorful bag be the focal point and conversation starter of an otherwise neutral outfit.

    3. The Canadian Tuxedo + Accessories

Think of a Canadian tuxedo as a blank canvas for your favorite accessories. A colorful scarf, statement sunglasses, beaded necklace, or cluster of collected brooches can completely transform the look.

    4. The Black Base + Conversation Coat

Instead of defaulting to a neutral coat, let your outerwear be the statement. A colorful coat over an all-black (or white, or gray) base is one of the easiest ways to make a capsule wardrobe feel instantly more playful.

    5. The Silk Pant + Contrasting Sweater

For the maximalists: pair a bright silk pant with a contrasting sweater for a full-color look that still feels polished. Turquoise + burgundy, butter yellow + ecru, and chartreuse + navy are a few of my favorite combinations to try.

The takeaway: A capsule wardrobe isn’t about limiting yourself to a handful of neutral pieces, but about creating a wardrobe where everything works together. So if your closet starts feeling a little too practical this fall, don’t be afraid to add some color. Sometimes a bright sweater, unexpected accessory, or conversation-making coat is all it takes to make getting dressed feel fun again.
