Colin Trevorrow’s Cancelled Star Wars 9 Helped Jurassic World Dominion

Director Colin Trevorrow reveals how his scrapped Star Wars Episode IX script helped him throughout the making of Jurassic World Dominion.

Director Colin Trevorrow reveals how his scrapped Star Wars 9 script helped him throughout the making of Jurassic World Dominion. Following the record-breaking box office success of Jurassic World in June 2015, Trevorrow and his collaborator Derek Connolly were hired to write the script for Star Wars Episode IX in August 2015 with the former set to direct. After the two completed their script, Trevorrow exited the project a few years later due to creative differences with Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy.

Following Trevorrow’s exit, The Force Awakens director J.J. Abrams returned to replace him on Episode IX. Trevorrow and Connolly both ultimately retained story credit on The Rise of Skywalker alongside Abrams and Chris Terrio. In 2020, Trevorrow and Connolly’s scrapped script, subtitled Duel of the Fates, found its way online, revealing a ton of shocking story decisions. Many elements originally found in their script were also utilized in the final product, such as Lando Calrissian leading a fleet of spaceships to save the day and Chewbacca finally receiving a medal.

Now, Trevorrow has revealed another reason why his work on Star Wars Episode IX was not all for naught. During an interview with Total Film (via Games Radar), the Dominion director discusses how his Star Wars experience was integral during the making of the Jurassic World threequel. Read what he says below:

What I appreciate about having worked on Star Wars is that I really got a practice run at making a new version of something we loved when we were kids and bringing it to a satisfying conclusion. So I felt like I got a master’s degree in that, during that time. And I took so much of what I learned, and also so many of the people who I worked with – Kevin Jenkins was our production designer on this. So many people who I met on that project came over and worked on Dominion, so I can’t feel anything but good about it, because it allowed us to make the film we made now.

Trevorrow revived the dino-fueled franchise in 2015 with Jurassic World and then passed the torch onto J.A. Bayona for the 2018 sequel Fallen Kingdom. He has now returned for the threequel, which has not only been billed as the final installment in the Jurassic World trilogy, but a culmination of the entire Jurassic Park franchise which began with the original trilogy released from 1993 from 2001. This is similar to how Star Wars Episode IX attempted bring the entire Skywalker saga to an end, including the sequel trilogy and the original trilogy that preceded it.

As Trevorrow mentions, the filmmaker essentially had a dry run at bringing a beloved saga to an end before he had to do it for real with Dominion. The writer/director absolutely had his hands full trying to provide conclusions to characters arcs for trilogy leads Owen Grady (Chris Pratt) and Claire Dearing (Bryce Dallas Howard), as well as legacy characters Dr. Ellie Sattler (Laura Dern), Dr. Ian Malcolm (Jeff Goldblum), and Dr. Alan Grant (Sam Neill), who all returned for Jurassic World Dominion. Hopefully Trevorrow’s Star Wars experience helped him create a satisfying end to the Jurassic saga.
