After the release of Secret Invasion episode 2, “Promises,” fans are convinced that Rhodey is definitely a Skrull. Marvel Studios’ latest Disney show continues as Nick Fury and Talos the Skrull desperately try to stop a faction of the shape-shifting aliens from taking over Earth. Following the unexpected death of Maria Hill, Fury may be losing another supposed ally who could help him in this new endeavor.
A big part of Secret Invasion‘s appeal is the challenge of deciphering which characters are Skrulls and which aren’t. Following the revelation that Everett Ross has been taken over by a shape-shifter, episode 2 suggests that Rhodey may actually be a Skrull — something that MCU fans have been convinced of. Is Rhodey Really A Skrull In Secret Invasion?
Coming into Secret Invasion, there were already conversations about who may be a Skrull in the MCU. Since the shape-shifters have been on Earth for decades now, many of them have been quietly cohabitating with the rest of the human population. That being said, this setup wasn’t meant to be permanent. Sadly, Fury and Carol Danvers failed to find the Skrulls their own home — something that has been repeatedly emphasized in Secret Invasion. For what it’s worth, director Ali Selim previously said that only fans can only fully trust Nick Fury and Talos.
It’s still difficult to decipher which MCU players are Skrulls hiding in plain sight. Occasionally, Marvel Studios would drop some clues, such as lingering the shot a bit longer on a character or even waiting until they turn back to their original green form. The biggest indication that Rhodey is a Skrull, however, is his behavior. Following his tense conversation with Fury, fans are convinced that his actions are uncharacteristic. Considering how long he has been in the MCU, long-time followers of the franchise know him quite well.
Another potential clue to Rhodey’s true nature is his ties to Dermot Mulroney’s US President Ritson, who could also be a Skrull. Debuting in Secret Invasion, the new Leader of the Free World has been suspected to be a shape-shifter due to Harrison Ford’s Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross being the United States president in Captain America: Brave New World. It isn’t outside the realm of possibility that Gravik and his followers were able to replace both Rhodey and Ritson with their own as part of their invasion plan.
