A prequel series to Zack Snyder’s 2006 historical epic film 300 is in the early stages of development at Warner Bros. Television, reports Variety.
The details of the plot are currently being ironed out, though Variety has learned the show will take place before the movie, which was a fictionalized retelling of the Battle of Thermopylae during the Greco-Persian Wars.
Snyder, who directed and co-wrote 300, is in talks to direct and serve as an executive producer with his wife Deborah Snyder under their Stone Quarry production banner. There’s no writer attached to the project as of yet.
300 producers Gianni Nunnari, Mark Canton, and Bernie Goldmann could also potentially return.
Based on Frank Miller and Lynn Varley’s graphic novel of the same name, 300 centered around Gerard Butler’s King Leonidas, who leads a greatly outnumbered force of 300 Spartans into battle against the 300,000-soldier army of Persia’s Xerxes I (Rodrigo Santoro). The film also starred Lena Headey, David Wenham, and Dominic West.
A commercial success, 300 raked in more than $450 million at the global box office against a reported budget of $65 million. A sequel titled 300: Rise of an Empire was released in 2014.
