Deceptive Images by Joanne Henning
A must-read for anyone who believes in the transformative power of passion and love.
Joanne Henning’s Deceptive Images is a beautifully crafted novel that blends romance, self-discovery and artistic passion into a compelling narrative. Set against the backdrop of the dance world, the story follows Rosa, a determined and talented woman navigating the complexities of her career, relationships and personal growth.
Henning’s vivid storytelling and intricate character development make this book an engrossing and emotionally resonant read.
New City, New Opportunities
At its core, Deceptive Images is a journey of transformation. Rosa, a young dentist with a passion for dance, finds herself at a crossroads in life. Having ended a long-term relationship with Yale, a man who could never fully commit to her, she embraces new opportunities and rediscovers her own ambitions.
Moving to a new city, she begins working at a dental practice while rekindling her love for dance. There, she encounters Alex, a talented yet emotionally guarded dance instructor who unknowingly shares a past connection with her. As their relationship develops, Rosa finds herself drawn into a complex mix of attraction, ambition and self-realization.
Dynamic and Exciting Characters
One of the things I really enjoyed about this book was Rosa’s character growth. She starts off unsure of herself, struggling between what’s expected of her and what she wants. But as the story unfolds, she gains confidence, steps out of her comfort zone and embraces her passions.
And then there’s Alex. He’s not just a brooding love interest; he’s got his own struggles, making him feel like a fully developed character rather than just a romantic lead. His dynamic with Rosa is fantastic; there’s tension and excitement, and their slow-burn attraction makes their scenes together so fun to read. Henning excels in character development, giving readers a protagonist who is both relatable and inspiring.
Career vs Passion, Stability vs Creativity
Deceptive Images explores several rich themes, each woven seamlessly into the narrative. The theme of self-discovery is central as Rosa learns to trust herself and make choices that align with her true aspirations.
Henning also delves into the tension between career and passion, highlighting the societal pressures to choose stability over creativity. It’s so relatable because who hasn’t struggled with balancing what they should do versus what makes them happy?
Emotionally Compelling and Beautifully Written
Through Rosa’s evolving relationships — with Alex, her friends and her colleagues — the novel examines love and emotional fulfillment, emphasizing that real love requires both vulnerability and mutual growth. Additionally, the novel’s depiction of artistic passion is both captivating and authentic, giving readers an intimate look at the discipline, dedication and beauty of dance.
Overall, Deceptive Images is an enthralling novel that resonates on multiple levels. It is a story of ambition, resilience and the power of embracing one’s true self. Readers who enjoy contemporary romance with strong character development and a focus on artistic expression will find this book deeply satisfying. Henning has crafted a narrative that is both emotionally compelling and beautifully written — a must-read for anyone who believes in the transformative power of passion and love.
Joanne Henning’s love of writing started at an early age. In high school, when her classmates groaned about the book and movie reviews due every month, she looked forward to the project. A creative writing professor in college pulled her aside and told her she was surprised she was a freshman, and she hoped she would find the time to write in the future. Henning doubted this was going to happen. She majored in biology and graduated from dental school in 1983. She didn’t write or read anything other than dental journals for many years. She concentrated on her family, her husband Rich, three children and her dental practice in New Jersey.
Everything changed in 2020, when her business was closed for several months because of COVID and later that year she was diagnosed with two unrelated cancers. Reading novels helped her through a difficult time. After a time, it wasn’t enough to read; she was compelled to write. The first book, Faulty Impressions, almost wrote itself. The second work, Deceptive Images, is about a young woman who finds her place in life and career after graduating. Henning is working on a third book, The Platinum Bicuspid, which is expected to release in 2025. Learn more about Joanne and her books at dentalromancenovel.com.
