Summary
- Keanu Reeves has appeared in numerous successful films, including franchises like The Matrix and John Wick, but also has standalone hits.
- Movies like Point Break and My Own Private Idaho have potential for sequels, given their cult following and Reeves’ versatile talent.
- Reeves’ involvement in films like The Replacements and Something’s Gotta Give could lead to intriguing sequels that explore new storylines and characters.
Keanu Reeves is undoubtedly one of the biggest movie stars in Hollywood and has appeared in countless hit films throughout his career, which has led to studios ordering sequels for many of the actor’s projects. Some of his most popular movie franchises include The Matrix, John Wick, and Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure. However, Reeves also has a handful of successful standalone feature films that have not achieved additional stories in the form of sequels.
The actor made his big screen debut in 1986 when he starred as Heaver in Youngblood, but his breakout role came as one of the two titular characters in 1989 with Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure. Reeves’ roles have varied from comedy to the action-hero archetype, and he has also dabbled in the horror, romance, and science fiction genres. He contains a degree of versatility that is somewhat rare in Hollywood, so it would make sense for studios to capitalize on his talent and order sequels for ten of his successful box-office hits, which are listed below.
10 Point Break
Keanu Reeves appeared as FBI Agent Johnny Utah in Point Break, which premiered in 1991. The actor starred opposite Patrick Swayze’s Bodhi in the crime action film, which revolved around Reeves’ character going undercover to investigate a bank robbery crew, which included Bodhi. Point Break generated positive reviews, made $103.5 million at the box office, and earned a cult following in the years following its release. A remake of the 1991 movie starring Édgar Ramírez and Luke Bracey came out in 2015, but it failed to achieve the same success as the first film. Perhaps a sequel starring Reeves (which has been long overdue) would fare better.
9 My Own Private Idaho
Sadly, a My Own Private Idaho sequel would have to be made without Keanu Reeves’ costar, River Phoenix, who died in 1993, but it would be interesting to explore a continuation of the story in the film. The 1991 independent drama movie, which was somewhat based on William Shakespeare’s Henry IV, Part 1, Henry IV, Part 2, and Henry V, revolved around Reeves and Phoenix’s characters — Scott Favor and Mike Waters — as they traveled from Portland to Idaho and Rome to find themselves. My Own Private Idaho is another cult classic, and given its popularity, it wouldn’t be surprising if director Gus Van Sant wanted to return to the world of this film.
8 The Replacements
Although The Replacements didn’t have an outstanding performance at the box office when it premiered in 2000, the sports drama film had enough heart to connect with football-loving audiences. Keanu Reeves starred as the protagonist, Shane Falco, in the movie, which was inspired by the 1987 NFL strike and, in our opinion, one of the better football feature films out there. The “I Will Survive” jail cell scene is legendary, after all. So perhaps Warner Bros. Pictures will want to revisit The Replacements sometime in the near future, with Reeves’ character taking on a coaching role. Anything is possible in this day and age in Hollywood.
7 Hardball
Speaking of sports films, it’s about time that Paramount Pictures ordered a Hardball sequel. The 2001 sports drama movie starred Keanu Reeves as Conor O’Neill, a Little League coach in Chicago who is forced into managing the team to settle his gambling debts. Of course, along the way, Reeves’ character grew attached to his players, making Hardball a (somewhat) feel-good film with a tragic ending.
6 Something’s Gotta Give
Something’s Gotta Give is not your typical romantic comedy, and that is what made it so good (plus the fact that its cast is stellar — it’s hard to go wrong with Keanu Reeves, Diane Keaton, and Jack Nicholson all in one movie). The 2003 film was a certified success, with both Keaton and Nicholson receiving recognition at award shows for their roles in the film. Since Reeves’ character Julian never got a satisfying ending in Something’s Gotta Give, a sequel could revolve around him and his life following his relationship with Keaton’s Erica.
5 Constantine
Constantine, based on the DC Comics and Vertigo Comics Hellblazer comic book series, is yet another cult film for Keanu Reeves. Despite its popularity and extensive source material, a sequel has never been made. However, one is (thankfully) in the works, 18 years following the first movie’s premiere. Reeves as John Constantine and original director Francis Lawrence are set to return, but other than those two facts, not much is known about the upcoming sequel. Constantine fans will just have to hope that it premieres sooner rather than later.
4 The Lake House
Certain actors have chemistry regardless of the movies they star in, and that’s the case for Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock. The two first worked together on Speed in 1994, and they reunited to star in The Lake House in 2006. The fantasy romance film revolved around Reeves and Bullock’s characters developing a connection despite living in two separate years (the movie does a better job at explaining this concept). However, by the end of The Lake House, the couple caught up in time together, and it would only be right if Warner Bros. Pictures ordered a sequel if only to give the world more of Reeves and Bullock as love interests.
3 Keanu
Keanu Reeves never physically appeared in Keanu, but the actor made a cameo as the voice of the titular feline character in the 2016 movie. The Jordan Peele and Keegan Michael-Key film centered around their characters going on an adventure to save their kitten, Keanu. The project received positive reviews, and if Peele ever has a desire to take a break from horror movies and return to comedy, a Keanu sequel should be the first thing on his list.
2 Always Be My Maybe
The Netflix film Always Be My Maybe is an underrated romantic comedy, and its inclusion of Keanu Reeves starring as himself was comedic genius. The streaming service should undoubtedly order a sequel to the movie starring Reeves, Ali Wong, and Randall Park if only to produce another scene of Park’s character trying to fight Reeves. Plus, Netflix needs to start recognizing which of its rom-coms deserve sequels (like Always Be My Maybe and Set It Up) and which ones should have never been produced in the first place.
1 DC League of Super-Pets
As mentioned above, Keanu Reeves is a very versatile actor, and one of his many talents includes voice acting. He starred as Bruce Wayne/Batman in DC League of Super-Pets in 2022, and the animated film was a critical and commercial success. Thankfully, there have been rumors of various sequels for the Keanu Reeves movie, and it is only a matter of time before he reprises his voice role as Batman.
