Sony Pictures has set its release plan for Darren Aronofsky‘s Austin Butler-led feature, while the next installment in the Insidious franchise is getting delayed.
Set to hit theaters Aug. 29, Caught Stealing was helmed by Aronofsky from a script by Charlie Huston, who wrote the books on which the movie is based. The film stars Butler as Hank Thompson, a down-on-his-luck former baseball player who is suddenly immersed in the New York City crime underworld in the 1990s.
Caught Stealing hails from Protozoa and also stars Zoë Kravitz, Regina King, Liev Schreiber, Matt King and Bad Bunny.
In a twinned move, the untitled sixth Insidious feature from Screen Gems and Blumhouse will now hit theaters Aug. 21, 2026, after previously having been scheduled for Aug. 29, 2025. The franchise launched in 2010 with the release of director James Wan’s Insidious, which stars Wilson, Rose Byrne and Ty Simpkins and centers on a family trying to protect their comatose son from demonic entities.
The series’ most recent release was 2023’s Insidious: The Red Door, which marked the directorial debut of franchise mainstay Wilson. As the fifth film in the Insidious world, The Red Door collected $189 million at the global box office.
Also, a placeholder date for an untitled Marvel movie initially slated for June 27, 2025, has been removed from Sony’s calendar. The future of Sony’s Marvel plans is unclear following the underperforming releases of 2024 titles Madame Web and Kraven the Hunter.
Butler’s other forthcoming projects include Ari Aster’s Eddington, which is also set to star Joaquin Phoenix, Pedro Pascal and Emma Stone. Aronofsky most recently directed the 2022 drama The Whale, which won two Oscars, including best actor for star Brendan Fraser. Fraser’s competition in the category included Butler’s performance in Elvis.
