The official Doctor Who Twitter account reacted to NASA’s James Webb telescope images after finding the visuals very similar to the classic series. The long-running British sci-fi series has explored time and space since 1963, often incorporating many real-world scientific inspirations. The first images from the James Webb Space Telescope first images were released in July 2022, offering an in-depth look into space.
For almost 60 years, Doctor Who has taken viewers from the depths of human history to futuristic, highly advanced species and civilizations across the stars. While the series has often envisioned how humanity will reach the stars, NASA made its own strides in discovering the mysteries of the universe through newly released images from their James Webb Space Telescope. Launched in December 2021 as a successor to the iconic Hubble Space Telescope, the James Webb Telescope’s first set of images was released by NASA on July 12, capturing radiation waves, nebulas, and dying stars for people across the globe to view. However, one specific image has caught the attention of the Doctor Who social media image.
On Twitter, the official Doctor Who Twitter account quote-tweeted a recent tweet by the NASA Webbe Telescope account that featured infrared images capturing the early universes. The series’ social media account commented that NASA’s images looked familiar, before sharing a video clip featuring the opening titles from Colin Baker’s time on the series. NASA’s recent images are incredibly similar to certain frames of the 80s series’ opening. Check out the post below to compare the image and opening title sequence:

While recent promotional material has revisited Baker’s era and answered questions regarding the fates of members of the cast, Baker’s time as the Doctor came during a rough time for the series. Following on from the departure of Peter Davidson’s Fifth Doctor partway through season 21 in “The Caves of Androzani,” the Sixth Doctor’s early characterization and concerns over violence in the series saw Doctor Who face multiple hiatuses and production issues. Baker’s time on the show would be concluded when the then-BBC executive and controller Michael Grade ordered that Baker be let go amidst a hiatus between seasons 23 and 24, with Sylvester McCoy joining as the Seventh Doctor in “Time and the Rani.” The Sixth Doctor has since flourished and gained new appreciation in expanded media, with Baker reprising the role for audio dramas and short animations.
Doctor Who has often looked to the future, making strides in terms of on-screen representation while also envisioning what may come next, be it through imagining events in the near future like picturing the London 2012 Olympics in 2006 or humanity spreading to distant worlds. Despite looking to the future, it’s doubtful anyone behind the scenes could have anticipated Baker’s opening credits would actually resemble photos of the early universe, though long-time fans are sure to enjoy the humorous observation. As the world gains a new perspective on the mysteries of the universe, the Doctor Who Twitter account’s post is a fun way to celebrate NASA’s latest achievement.
