Warning! Spoilers ahead for Extraction 2.
Extraction 2 director Sam Hargrave teases that a spinoff movie could be on the way for two of the sequel’s fan-favorite characters. Serving as a sequel to the hit 2020 action film, Extraction 2 sees Chris Hemsworth return as mercenary Tyler Rake for a new mission. After playing much smaller roles in the first movie, Golshifteh Farahani’s Nik and Adam Bessa’s Yaz, two siblings, return to aid Rake in his mission, ultimately getting much more screen time.
Now, in a recent interview with Collider, Hargrave teases that the world of Extraction could further expand with a Nik and Yaz spinoff, Nik, in particular, he explains, has been a popular character with audiences, and a small seed was planted in the most recent sequel to further set up her own spinoff adventure. Check out Hargrave’s full comment below:
“Here’s a fun kind of spoiler alert, we did this scene that was in and out, and it was out, and it was in – where Nik is talking, she brings in the strudels to the mom and kid who are in the bed in Vienna, and they have a talk about second chances.
“That was a scene that was kind of in, it was out, but we left it in because one, it means multiple meanings; she’s talking, yes, about the kid, but she’s also talking about Rake, and she’s also talking about the son. And we threw a line in there when she’s kind of empathizing with the mom, and saying, “I know what it feels like, I’ve been there,” and it’s subtle, it’s an Easter egg, but that’s kind of hinting towards her and Yaz’s own spinoff movie. So we’re gonna get to follow them.”
In the first movie, neither Nik nor Yaz get all that much to do, but Extraction 2 changes this, further fleshing out both characters through action scenes and quiet character beats. Ultimately, both characters are made a lot more interesting and worth rooting for. While a Nik & Yaz Extraction spinoff hasn’t officially gotten the green light from Netflix, the plot of the most recent movie and Hargrave’s comments hint at what it could entail.
After Yaz’s emotional death in Extraction 2, any spinoff involving the character would likely have to be a prequel. The spinoff being a prequel is further backed up by Nik’s remark in the film about empathizing with the mother and Hargrave’s own comment, teasing that Farahani’s character was perhaps once a mother in another life. An Extraction spinoff could explore exactly what happened to Nik’s child, delving deeper into exactly what her life was like before becoming a gun for hire.
With Extraction 2 further establishing how compelling a character Nik is, a spinoff has the potential to double down on this, making her more three-dimensional and giving her regrets, fears, and her own motives. She and her brother are also formidable fighters and a spinoff could delve into exactly how they acquired their skills and got into the mercenary game. With Extraction 2 already being a big hit and a third film potentially already on the way, a Nik and Yaz spinoff feels like the perfect next step for the franchise.
