Gerard Butler’s New Post-Apocalyptic Thriller Debuts With Solid Rotten Tomatoes Score

Gerard Butler will kick off 2026 with a strong start in light of the first reviews for Greenland 2: Migration.

Butler and Morena Baccarin starred in the original 2020 movie, as the Garrity family must reach a secret bunker to survive a planet-destroying comet. After Greenland ended with the couple and their son surviving the disaster, the upcoming sequel will follow them as they search for a new home in Europe, while encountering a new threat in a post-apocalyptic world.

Just ahead of its release, the first reviews for Greenland 2 are in. According to Rotten Tomatoes, the 2026 sequel has a 70% score based on 10 reviews. While the score will fluctuate as more reviews are tabulated, it’s not far off from the original Greenland movie, which had 77%. Several critics note that Migration is a worthy follow-up, with even more stakes and action, while maintaining the movie’s core, which is the Garrity family.

In ScreenRant’s review of Greenland 2: Migration, Liz Declan highly praised the sequel for its action and decent continuation of Garrity’s story despite logistical issues. Awarding a strong 8 out of 10 stars, she compared the post-apocalyptic vibes to The Last of Us and thought that this approach worked as a compelling follow-up to the 2020 disaster movie because “stakes continue to feel high, often in completely unexpected ways.”

“All things considered, these grievances are trivial, and Greenland 2 manages to put itself in a league of its own, proving that, not only can disaster movies avoid being totally nonsensical, but also, there can be something that comes after—and that exploration of what’s next can be just as good as what came before.”

While Butler and Baccarin return as part of the Greenland 2 cast, Roman Griffin Davis replaced Roger Dale Floyd as Nathan Garrity. Ric Roman Waugh returns as the director, while Christ Sparling co-wrote the screenplay with Mitchell LaFortune.

Greenland 2: Migration will release in theaters on December 9, 2026.
