James Gunn appears to confirm Adam Warlock will make his first MCU appearance in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 rather than the holiday special.
Writer and director James Gunn seemingly confirms that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will be Adam Warlock’s first appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. After venturing into the DC Extended Universe with The Suicide Squad and HBO Max’s Peacemaker, comic book aficionado Gunn returned to work with Marvel Studios on the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special and Vol. 3—which is poised to be the final installment in his MCU trilogy. The film will see Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldaña, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, and Sean Gunn all reprise their roles as the Benatar’s titular crew.
Taking place after Avengers: Endgame, Vol. 3 was originally supposed to come out near the beginning of Phase 4. However, the brief firing of Gunn and a reworking of Marvel Studios’ slate has resulted in a release date of May 5, 2023. In addition to following up with Endgame’s displaced Gamora, the film will fulfill a promise made in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. The second film’s post-credits scene teased Adam Warlock, who has been confirmed to appear in Vol. 3 and be portrayed by Will Poulter. The holiday special is set to hit Disney+ this Christmas season and will reportedly lead into Vol. 3, leaving many to wonder if Poulter’s character would make his MCU debut before Vol. 3.
James Gunn has once again taken to social media to interact with fans and share behind-the-scenes information. When asked by a fan whether Adam Warlock “make his first MCU appearance” in Vol. 3, the champion of interstellar misfits responded with a simple, “yes.” Check out the interaction below:

There’s only so much one can infer from a one-word response. Ever since the Sovereign High Priestess Ayesha revealed the cosmic hero’s cocoon in Vol. 2, fans have wanted to see Adam Warlock in the MCU. Gunn previously said the holiday special would set up Vol. 3 and introduce multiple MCU characters, which is why people thought Poulter would appear. However, it makes sense to save the highly anticipated character for the feature rather than the streaming exclusive.
Little is known about the holiday special other than it will feature an all-new soundtrack and fall between Thor: Love & Thunder and Vol. 3, chronologically. Even less is known about Adam Warlock’s role in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 including whether he’ll be introduced as a hero or a villain. With Bautista’s Drax on his way out, new characters like Adam Warlock will inhabit the MCU moving forward. As his debut serves as a litmus test for that future, Gunn has had nothing but good things to say about Poulter’s performance. That said, production on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 officially wrapped last month and the movie is set to release in theaters on May 5, 2023.
