Iron Man Writer Teases Upcoming Frankenstein Project

Iron Man Writer Teases Upcoming Frankenstein Project

Christopher Cantwell’s Iron Man has fans excited for his next project, with a cryptic tweet suggesting it will center around Frankenstein’s monster.

Writer Christopher Cantwell, currently presiding over an impressive run on Marvel’s Iron Man, just made a cryptic reference to Frankenstein’s Monster, suggesting a future project starring the undead antihero.

Non-comic readers might be surprised to learn that pretty much every comic-book universe – from Fables to the Hellboy franchise – has its own version of Frankenstein’s Monster. As a public domain character, Frankenstein is available for anyone to incorporate into their stories, more or less guaranteeing his appearance in decade-spanning comic universes. DC in particular made a modern-day push to turn Frankenstein into a big-name hero, working for the supernatural agency SHADE. He’s even been a member of the Justice League Dark on occasion, which capitalizes on his skill set. Although he’s technically Frankenstein’s monster, the character usually just goes by the moniker Frankenstein or even Frank.

Iron Man writer Christopher Cantwell created speculation about a new Frankenstein project with a single tweet he posted with a picture of a Frankenstein action figure. The simple caption “soon” didn’t offer much in terms of hints as to what he could be referring to, but it seems to imply a new Frankenstein project is coming from him. Given the long production timelines that comics often have, this may be a project set to launch around Halloween, a time at which Marvel has a history of resurrecting its old horror franchises, such as Werewolf by Night or the Zombie, Simon Garth.

That’s not to say that the project is necessary comics-based, as Cantwell has also worked in TV with projects like Halt and Catch Fire, however the use of a Marvel figure does suggest this. The figure Cantwell posted actually comes from an old Marvel Legends line of figures that includes other monsters like Dracula and the Wolfman, and is shown flanked by Doctor Doom and Kang the Conqueror. Marvel has published Frankenstein series before, and the monster has even clashed with Wolverine and the X-Men, with the latest member of the Frankenstein family – Baron Maximilian von Katzenelnbogen – first appearing as a member of the anti-mutant Hellfire Club.

Despite this, Cantwell often posts images including action figures from titles he’s worked on, so it’s possible Doom and Kang aren’t intended as a clue that Frank is returning to Marvel. They could merely be an allusion to the fact that Cantwell wrote a Doctor Doom book that heavily featured Kang (though with his advanced science and Gothic castle, Doom would be an excellent choice to star alongside Frankenstein.) The truth will become apparent – as Cantwell promises – ‘soon,’ so for now fans will have to speculate, safe in the knowledge that whatever Frankenstein project emerges, it will likely be as loaded with pathos and ambition as the recent Iron Man.
