Karla Sofía Gascón thanked the Academy and congratulated winners from Sunday night’s Oscars in a post-ceremony message on Monday, concluding a chapter of the actress’ PR crisis which began over a month ago with a series of resurfaced racially charged social media posts.
“Thanks to the members of the Academy for the best actress nomination, for the invitation to the ceremony,” Gascón wrote in Spanish on Instagram, translated by The Hollywood Reporter. “I enjoyed it very much, it was entertaining and fun, especially the fabulous host Jimmy Kimmel — he is fantastic and looks more like the great Conan O’Brien every day.”
Gascón went on to say she “loved hugging so many friends and colleagues on this return.”
The actress, star of Emilia Pérez and first-ever openly transgender woman to be nominated in her category, entered the Oscars race as a frontrunner for best actress, but the campaign’s prospects quickly died when multiple racially charged tweets from the actress resurfaced in February.
Gascón kept a low profile after the controversy, choosing not to attend the SAG Awards last weekend and skipping the Oscars red carpet on Sunday. At the Cesar Awards in France last Friday, she told The Hollywood Reporter she was “grateful to be back” and “grateful to all those who’ve believed in me — to Netflix, the production company and my colleagues. We can close this beautiful and difficult path that began three years ago.”
At the Oscars, Gascón skipped the red carpet. From the audience, she laughed along when host Conan O’Brien told her, “Karla, if you are going to tweet about the Oscars, remember: My name is Jimmy Kimmel.”
Per her post Monday, it would appear she also followed his directions.
Gascón concluded her post by congratulating all the winners, celebrating Zoe Saldaña for her Emilia Pérez win, as well as songwriters Clément Ducol and Camille, who won for the film’s song,”El Mal.”
