    Love & Thunder Trailer’s Auto-Captions

    Love & Thunder Trailer’s Auto-Captions

Director Taika Waititi caught a number of hilarious errors in the auto-generated captions for the newly released Thor: Love and Thunder trailer.

Taika Waititi calls out the hilariously inaccurate auto-generated captions for the new Thor: Love and Thunder trailer. Following the events of Avengers: Endgame, the latest outing for the Asgardian sees Thor (Chris Hemsworth) searching for inner peace as he hangs up his superhero career. However, the emergence of the fearsome Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale) forces the Avenger to team-up with allies King Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson) and Korg (Waititi) in an effort to defeat him, as well as reuniting with his ex-girlfriend Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), who now wields Mjolnir as the Mighty Thor. The MCU entry will also feature Russell Crowe as Zeus, Jeff Goldblum as the Grandmaster from Thor: Ragnarok, and the Guardians of the Galaxy, appearing ahead of their next solo-outing in 2023.

    SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

The marketing for Thor: Love and Thunder has been ramping-up over the last couple of weeks, with the film’s first teaser trailer and poster releasing just over a month ago. The teaser quickly went on to become the seventh-most-viewed trailer ever in its first 24 hours, providing an indication of the excitement running among fans for the lightning-wielding hero’s newest adventure. Yesterday, Marvel released the first official Thor: Love and Thunder trailer for the movie, which showcased more of Thor and Jane’s reunion and Crowe’s king of the Olympians. The footage also notably gave audiences their first look at Bale’s Gorr the God Butcher, illustrating the villain’s vow to kill all gods, including Thor.

However, it would seem that not every element of this latest piece of marketing for the film has gone completely to plan. As Waititi points out on Twitter, the social media site’s auto-captions frequently mistranslate the trailer’s dialogue. The director jokes, “if robots are planning to take over the world they’re going to need to learn different accents,” providing a number of screenshots illustrating some of the bizarre misreadings. Check-out Waititi’s images below:

The fact that it’s not simply one character falling victim to Twitter’s dreadful auto-captions does suggest, as Waititi observes, that it may come from the fact that the cast boasts a range of accents. Waititi has mocked Thor: Love and Thunder marketing before, previously referring to the teaser trailer as the entire finished film. But his wry comment that “this movie is gonna be a wild ride for the hearing impaired” does also imply a more serious call for Twitter to fix the egregious errors for those who genuinely need the auto-captions.

Although Twitter’s awful mistranslation of the new Thor: Love and Thunder trailer will be alternatingly funny and frustrating for fans, it seems unlikely that it will diminish the overall buzz following its release. The trailer shows that the sequel has lost none of the color or humor that made Thor: Ragnarok such a hit, and with more clips of Jane as the Mighty Thor and Bale’s Gorr on display, as well as a vibrant new Thor: Love and Thunder poster featuring the major characters, Marvel devotees have much to be excited about. With the Waititi film set to release on July 8, audiences won’t have much longer to wait to see it in full – presumably with accurate subtitles.
