Magnum P.I. Cast React To Being Saved By NBC With Season 5 & 6 Renewal

Magnum P.I. Cast React To Being Saved By NBC With Season 5 & 6 Renewal

The cast of Magnum P.I., including Jay Hernandez, Perdita Weeks, Zachary Knighton, and Amy Hill, celebrates the show getting picked up by NBC.

The cast of the Magnum P.I. reboot has shared their reactions to the show being picked up at a new network. Magnum P.I., which is a Hawaii-set crime procedural series, originally starred Tom Selleck in the title role and ran on CBS for eight seasons between 1980 and 1988. Exactly three decades after the show went off the air, the network rebooted the series with Suicide Squad star Jay Hernandez in the lead role. The cast of the reboot series also includes Zachary Knighton, Amy Hill, Stephen Hill, Tim Kang, and British actress Perdita Weeks. Throughout its four seasons, the show has also featured frequent crossovers with the reboot of Hawaii Five-0.

The Magnum P.I. season 4 finale, “Close to Home,” aired on May 6, 2022. Although the show was a ratings success, it was abruptly canceled that same month due to CBS and NBC Universal failing to negotiate to maintain the rights. The show was left in limbo for nearly two months, before it was announced that NBC would be picking up the series, renewing it for a ten-episode season 5 and season 6.

Today, the Magnum P.I. cast has taken to social media to celebrate the good news. Hernandez posted a Tweet celebrating the show’s circuitous route to renewal, thanking NBC and the fans before saying “time to dust off the Aloha shirt!” Stephen Hill also shared a sweet message, writing “love you so much” in Hawaiian. Weeks posted a photo on Instagram of her in vacation garb saying “off to see the Ohana.” Meanwhile, Amy Hill and Knighton also thanked the “amazing” fans, saying they are “everything.” Check out the cast’s posts below:

It was a bit circuitous but we did it!Your love & support helped get us over the finish line, thank you & thanks to @nbc for stepping up!Time to dust off the Aloha shirt! #ohana ❣️???????????????????? https://t.co/wJqoJ64lEh

If the swap to NBC can maintain the series’ CBS ratings, the show might be set to run just as many seasons as the original Magnum P.I.. If that’s the case, the cast will be cemented in the popular consciousness and potentially become just as iconic to today’s television landscape as Tom Selleck was to the 1980s. While shows and the ways people access them have become more and more splintered, having a presence on a major network is still a way for these actors to reach a broad audience across the country.

It certainly seems like the Magnum P.I. cast has bonded, as everyone sounds genuinely ectastic to be returning to the series. Thankfully, this particular transfer of power was swift and rather painless, compared to other canceled series that were picked up by other networks, like Arrested Development‘s Netflix revival seven years after it was canceled. This cast is lucky, and they certainly know it and have been expressing their gratitude profusely.
