With the Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake not only confirmed but now having showcased its stunning gameplay, fans are naturally turning their attention to the potential Majora’s Mask remake. Many have speculated that one is in the works, with numerous leaks and rumors pointing to that being true. Of course, it would make sense for Nintendo to remake Majora’s Mask, considering it is a direct sequel to Ocarina of Time, and the experience would be incomplete without both games being remade on Switch 2.
Well, fortunately, it seems like the Majora’s Mask remake has been quietly confirmed. While some fans are split on a Majora’s Mask remake, for those who are excited for the game to finally get the overhaul it deserves, it very much seems like it is happening. This is obviously amazing news, although likely expected by many, and with Ocarina of Time having showcased just how faithful a remake it will be, we now know exactly what kind of remake Majora’s Mask on the Switch 2 will be.
The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask Remake Is Coming
It has always made sense for Nintendo to release both a remake of Ocarina of Time and Majora’s Mask. This is, as aforementioned, because they’re part of a duology (technically a trilogy if you count OoT’s Link’s appearance in Twilight Princess), and it would be a shame to only get one part of said duology officially remade. However, unlike the original Majora’s Mask, which was famously built on top of Ocarina of Time’s engine in under a year, making a whole new remake in 2026 and beyond would take a considerable amount of time, even if they shared similar assets.
However, while we may not be getting it any time soon, a recent leak all but confirms that the Majora’s Mask remake is real. The original voice actor for Link in Ocarina of Time, Nobuyuki Hiyama, updated his IMDb page to include a new project titled The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask HD. His role in it is as the mocap for Fierce Deity Link, a role he played in the original Majora’s Mask. The project doesn’t have a release date, but it is listed in Hiyama’s upcoming roles section with its status listed as being in the post-production stage.
Of course, if you’re even remotely interested in Majora’s Mask, there’s a good chance you’ve heard of this leak before and felt somewhat doubtful of its validity. However, while there are a few problems surrounding a potential Majora’s Mask remake, this seems fairly legitimate. For starters, this was added to Hiyama’s IMDb page months ago and has not been taken down since. Additionally, with Ocarina of Time confirming full voice acting for all characters and improved cutscenes, it isn’t outrageous to assume that Hiyama would return to update his performance.
Majora’s Mask Remake Feels Necessary
Nintendo has yet to confirm the existence of a Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask remake, although one can only imagine it is saving it for an upcoming Direct rather than through a random post simply to verify months-old leaks. However, while there is every possibility that said leaks could turn out to be untrue, it seems highly likely that Hiyama’s updated IMDb profile has quietly confirmed what fans have expected and known all this time.
Even should it end up being untrue, after seeing Ocarina of Time’s gameplay, it is clear that we need a Majora’s Mask remake. The game is easily one of the most compelling in the series, offering a more mature narrative that The Legend of Zelda is sorely lacking today. It’s a bold sequel, an excellent game in its own right, and iconic for so many reasons. A Majora’s Mask remake is necessary, especially if Ocarina of Time is getting one, and I’m somewhat doubtful Nintendo would omit it, especially when it’s almost guaranteed to make a lot of money.
