Modern Warfare 2 Could Bring CoD Franchise Back to Steam, Per Leak

Modern Warfare 2 Could Bring CoD Franchise Back to Steam, Per Leak

A recent leak has revealed that the upcoming release of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 could potentially mark the franchise’s return to Steam.

The Call of Duty franchise could be making its way back to Steam if a recent leak involving Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 proves accurate. The release date for CoD: Modern Warfare 2 was finally announced by publisher Activision Blizzard earlier this month, and fans have eagerly been awaiting more details on the game. The upcoming title is the sequel to 2019’s CoD: Modern Warfare and is the latest entry in the ongoing reboot of the series. It’s also been reported that CoD: MW2 will also introduce a new iteration of CoD: Warzone.

Rumors and leaks surrounding Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 have gone back as far as last year, long before Activision Blizzard finally confirmed its existence earlier this year with Infinity Ward once again handling the game’s development. Unsurprisingly, even more leaks and rumors have sprung up since its confirmation, with one such rumor claiming Modern Warfare 2 may include tradeable skins and blueprints for one of the game modes it will reportedly introduce. According to leaks, the mode will feature an in-game marketplace where players will be able to purchase or trade certain items.

This latest leak was discovered by Reddit user Kalinine (via Game Rant) who spotted that the art used for the link to the franchise’s Steam portal was from the upcoming Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. The last Call of Duty game to be made available on Steam was 2017’s Call of Duty: WW2, so updating the graphic – which features popular CoD: Modern Warfare 2 character Simon “Ghost” Riley – may hint at the possibility of Modern Warfare 2 being made available on the platform in some way. Ghost is one of Modern Warfare‘s returning characters, alongside John “Soap” MacTavish, who was the playable protagonist in the original Modern Warfare trilogy.

The Modern Warfare 2 graphic featuring Ghost was eventually replaced with a blank image when news of its discovery began spreading, which could point to the rumors of its Steam return being true. Neither Activision Blizzard nor Infinity Ward has commented on the image, which was probably uploaded by mistake, so there’s no confirmation on what it could mean at the moment. It’s possible that the graphic was either uploaded too early, or the art was simply used unintentionally. It’s just one of the many leaks that have come out about the game in recent weeks, with one other claiming that Modern Warfare 2 will feature four classic maps from the original game.

Given that the alleged Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 leak simply involves concept art used for a link within Steam, a potential release on the PC platform has to be taken with a sizable grain of salt for now. Whether or not Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 will be available on Steam will most likely be confirmed closer to its release in October, but until then, fans are left to speculate.

Editor’s Note: A lawsuit has been filed against Activision Blizzard by the California Department of Fair Employment and Housing, which alleges the company has engaged in abuse, discrimination, and retaliation against its female employees. Activision Blizzard has denied the allegations. The full details of the Activision Blizzard lawsuit (content warning: rape, suicide, abuse, harassment) are being updated as new information becomes available.
