If you’re a PlayStation Plus subscriber, you’ve been having a good past year or so. The service really stepped things up and delivered more on their promise to grow the Game Catalog, which serves as an analog to Xbox Game Pass.
Over on the PlayStation Blog, Sony just shared the news that more games will be coming to the PlayStation Game Catalog, and there’s one in particular that stands out.
This PlayStation Plus Freebie Isn’t For The Faint Of Heart
It’ll Take Some Getting Used To
If you’re a fan of challenges, Darkest Dungeon 2 will be available on the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog on January 20. It’ll be available for both PS4 and PS5 users. Several of the games in this Game Catalog dump are horror-related, including Resident Evil Village and A Quiet Place: The Road Ahead.
Here’s the official description for Darkest Dungeon 2, which gets at what the game is offering: “Embark on a roguelike road trip of the damned in this sequel to the critically acclaimed Darkest Dungeon. Form a party, equip your stagecoach, and set off across the decaying landscape on a last-gasp quest to avert the apocalypse. Discover the failings of your flawed heroes in playable backstories and help them find redemption on the road. Explore various tactics as you battle unspeakable horrors who stand between you and salvation. With careful leadership you can create the party bonds required to withstand the nightmarish onslaught, reach the Mountain and prevail against the monstrous manifestations of your failures.”
“Monstrous manifestations of your failures” is a great way to put it, because you will likely fail often in Darkest Dungeon 2. Over on HowLongToBeat, the average playthrough will run you roughly 30 hours, but going for a completionist run will clock in at over 90 hours. At its highest level, it can be an absolutely brutal game, which many fans are currently reckoning with from a design perspective.
Darkest Dungeon 2 Will Kick Your Butt
And It’ll Take A While
Originally released in 2023, Darkest Dungeon 2 has received many patches since then, with several DLC expansions available. Since its debut, it’s had a somewhat polarizing reception from some fans, who aren’t fans of the rougelite setup or the differences from the generally beloved first entry.
As one comment puts it, “There is no middle ground, you either love it or you hate it.” Another user cheerily notes: “I platinumed the first and consider myself fairly good at it. Tried [Darkest Dungeon] 2 and had such a hard time with it so good luck”.
That uncertainty is what makes it a perfect game for the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog. You can always check it out, and if it’s not your thing, you can delete it. Best case, you get sucked in and go on a 90-hour completion run.
