Star Wars: The Last Jedi writer-director Rian Johnson gives his endorsement to a detailed defense of the movie from its most common criticisms.
Writer-director Rian Johnson endorses a detailed defense of Star Wars: The Last Jedi. It’s been almost five years since the middle movie of the Star Wars sequel trilogy was released. For the most part, Lucasfilm has moved on from it and the Skywalker Saga as a whole, with an attempt to focus on other characters or time settings with a string of Disney+ shows.
Released in 2017, The Last Jedi was the sequel to J.J. Abrams’ Star Wars: The Force Awakens. While the 2015 film explicitly set up Johnson’s sequel with a cliffhanger, Johnson’s story made several unexpected turns, which should have been a great thing – after all, the space opera franchise is known for its many plot twists. Instead, The Last Jedi divided Star Wars fans perhaps more than any modern blockbuster has done to its fandom, garnering a wide spectrum of opinions. Some dub it the best of Disney’s Star Wars venture, while others deem it the worst of the entire franchise. Johnson has since distanced himself from the discourse surrounding the movie, focusing on other projects like his Knives Out sequels.
Now, however, Johnson retweets writer Bryan Young’s defense of Star Wars: The Last Jedi. The film’s director prefaces the tweet by acknowledging he hasn’t “touched this stuff in years,” but the original author’s breakdown of the blockbuster’s most common criticisms is just too good to pass up. Check out Johnson’s endorsement of Young below:
Haven’t touched this stuff in years, but Bryan lines them up and knocks them down so succinctly and with such a pleasant tone, I figured eh, fuck it. (replies off to spare his timeline) https://t.co/SxrLP8qWOM

Although the discussion surrounding Star Wars: The Last Jedi never really died down, it’s experiencing a level of resurgence thanks to the release of Obi-Wan Kenobi. Narratively, there’s really no direct connection between the Lucasfilm projects, since they take place in two different time settings and feature different characters. But, the Disney+ series is evoking a parallel between Obi-Wan and Luke Skywalker in The Last Jedi. In his show, Obi-Wan is at its lowest; he’s racked with guilt with what happened to Anakin Skywalker, and he lacks faith in the Force. This is the reason why he is significantly weaker than Darth Vader in their first encounter since Mustafar. One of the biggest criticisms of Star Wars: The Last Jedi was its depiction of a broken and faithless Luke, and with Obi-Wan going through the same thing, it seems to justify Johnson’s approach.
It’ll be interesting to see if, through Obi-Wan Kenobi, people will gain a different perspective on Star Wars: The Last Jedi. As Young details in his Twitter thread, most of the biggest criticisms of the film were misinterpreted. While Johnson didn’t go point-by-point, his retweet constitutes his endorsement of Young’s defense of some of the purported problematic plot points of the blockbuster. Since replies for both tweets are turned off, there’s no saying how the general public receives this breakdown. In any case, that’s not the goal of these tweets anyway – it’s an attempt to highlight some of the misconstrued parts of Star Wars: The Last Jedi.
