Stranger Things star Natalia Dyer has opened up about season 4’s love triangle between Nancy, Jonathan, and Steve, revealing her ideal outcome. Dyer has portrayed Nancy Wheeler since season 1 of the hit Netflix sci-fi series. Stranger Things season 4, volume 2, was released on July 1st, 2022.
In Stranger Things season 4, Nancy Wheeler and Jonathan Byers’ (Charlie Heaton) long-distance relationship is tested. Despite their strong feelings for one another, Jonathan begins to reconsider the pair’s college plans without telling Nancy. When the being known as Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower) begins murdering teenagers in Hawkins, Nancy joins Dustin Henderson (Gaten Matarazzo), Max Mayfield (Sadie Sink), Steve Harrington (Joe Keery), and Robin Buckley (Maya Hawke) in uncovering the truth. While the pair separated in season 2, Nancy and Steve share moments together during the investigation, with Steve confessing he imagined a future with her when they were together. After the giant Upside Down gate opened, Jonathan returns to Hawkins, but he and Nancy are still keeping secrets from one another. With season 4 focusing on Nancy’s experience with Steve, Dyer has opened up about Nancy’s situation.
In an interview with Variety, Dyer discussed the love triangle, stating that she feels Nancy requires some time for self-discovery. Dyer said that while Nancy is in a complicated situation, she hopes Nancy’s growth will help her ultimately choose the right thing with integrity. Dyer also opened up about Nancy’s closeness with Steve, explaining that the season shows the pair still cares for one another and always will regardless of who Nancy ultimately chooses. Check out Dyer’s response below.
“It’s really tough. I don’t know. It feels like she’s been in a relationship for a while so maybe she needs some self discovery time. It’s a bit complicated. Whatever happens, I would hope that she does it with integrity. I just think she’s stronger now. I think she’s more sure of herself. So whatever she decides to do, she’ll do it for the right reasons…
What this season touches on is the fact that these two people do care about each other and that hasn’t gone away. What that is and what label you want to put on that, I don’t know, but we see these characters meeting again after growing up and going through life with it… Truly, I have no idea where it’s gonna go but I do like that they at least still care about each other.”
Heaton previously addressed Jonathan’s divisive storyline that saw him separated from Nancy for much of the season in California, acting as the responsible adult figure for his own group. In an interview in May 2022, Heaton addressed Jonathan’s situation, explaining that the growing scope of the series’ ensemble cast means the series will develop in new ways. Heaton also stated that Jonathan’s questioning of his future allowed fans to become further invested in the couple.
Nancy and Steve were one of Stranger Things‘ initial couples, and while the pair drifted apart, both characters have had incredible growth, with Steve becoming a firm fan favorite whose potential volume 2 fate had fans extremely concerned. With Jonathan separated from Nancy, she and Steve had the opportunity to properly share scenes together for the first time since season 2, giving fans a chance to see just how each character has changed. With Stranger Things season 5 set to conclude the series, Dyer’s comments offer insight into Nancy’s situation, suggesting that whatever Nancy chooses, it will reflect her character’s growth.
