The article contains spoilers from Succession season 4.
Succession star Brian Cox opens up about his media mogul Logan Roy’s surprising early season 4 death, revealing how his character’s shocking demise left him feeling “a little bit rejected.” The hit HBO dark comedy series centers on the Roy family as they grapple for control of Logan’s global media and entertainment conglomerate Waystar Royco. Jeremy Strong, Alan Ruck, Kieran Culkin, Sarah Snook, and Matthew Macfadyen portray Logan’s family members and associates battling to lead the company. After debuting in 2018, Succession will finally end with season 4, as the series finale, “With Open Eyes,” is set to air on May 28.
While Succession shocked audiences with season 4’s surprising Logan death twist, Cox opened up about his early departure, revealing that Logan’s untimely death left him slightly displeased. As reported by Deadline, Cox revealed in an interview for the BBC’s Amol Rajan Interviews that while he would ultimately be fine with his character’s fate, he did feel that everything his character had been through should have led to more for Logan than how his presence was handled in following episodes. Check out Cox’s full comments below:
“I was fine with it ultimately, but I did feel a little bit rejected. You know, I felt a little bit like all the work I’ve done and finally I’m going to, you know, end up as an ear on a carpet of a plane.”
How Cox’s Early Succession Departure Allowed The Series’ To Finally Address The Roy Family’s Fate
While Cox felt that Logan’s early death in “Connor’s Wedding” left the character slightly unfulfilled, the death forced the cast to finally reckon with a long debated scenario. Despite numerous health scares, scandals, and family fallouts that had almost seen Logan dethroned, the patriarch maintained some measure of control over his business through official positions or behind-the-scenes manipulations. As such, Logan’s death on the way to Sweden left the characters to grapple with what inheriting his position would entail for the remainder of the series, supposedly without his lingering involvement.
Alongside showing how Logan’s children would finally handle their father’s complex web of political and business dealings in the wake of his death, Cox’s Succession departure also allowed the series to shine a light on the enigmatic Logan’s backstory in ways it hadn’t done previously. In “Church and State,” Ewan’s (James Cromwell) honest recollection of Logan’s life during his eulogy informed the experiences that shaped the late patriarch and how they affected those around him. Logan’s funeral not only sheds light on his past but offers a foreboding glimpse at where the sibling’s grasp for power could ultimately take them if they follow his example.
While Cox may feel displeased by Logan’s early death in Succession season 4, the character’s departure took audiences by surprise and emphasized that the series’ end was drawing near. By allowing season 4 to focus on the Roy siblings grappling with Logan’s legacy, the show could finally explore just what his lasting impact would be. With one final episode of Succession remaining, it will answer how Logan’s children will prosper or fall into their father’s similar failings.
