Ted Lasso’s Future Gets Promising Update From Season 3 Director (Including A Timeline For Its Potential Return)

    Summary

    • Despite uncertainty about its future, director Declan Lowney suggests that Ted Lasso may return sooner than expected, leaving fans hopeful.
    • Co-creator and star Brendan Hunt has hinted at the possibility of a return after a break, leaving the show’s future open-ended.
    • While some actors express uncertainty about a potential season 4, Apple TV+ may want to capitalize on the show’s success by making a future happen.

With no concrete answer for the show’s future, director Declan Lowney has a promising update on Ted Lasso‘s potential return. Season 3 of the hit Apple TV+ show saw AFC Richmond still being seen as the underdogs in the Premier League while also reeling from the loss of Nate to their personal rivals West Ham United. While not as acclaimed as its first two seasons, Ted Lasso season 3 garnered mostly positive reviews from critics and audiences alike and has left many hopeful for more, despite it mostly being wrapped.

In anticipation of the show’s run at the Primetime Emmy Awards, The Hollywood Reporter spoke with Declan Lowney to discuss Ted Lasso. When asked about directing the season 3 finale, and whether the show is actually over, the season 2 Emmy winner offered a promising update for its future, saying that the feeling during production was the it’s only “the end for now” and that it could return sooner than some think. See what Lowney said below:

Everybody knew it was the end, but it’s also the end for now. (Laughs.) It’s going to be two or three years before anything happens — if anything happens — so let’s try and tie up all these stories properly. I’m trying to remember how the script was delivered, because I’ve a feeling I might have gotten a big chunk of it, and then there’d be more coming — but I didn’t know how much more yet. I was like, “There’s a lot of tying up to do!” And then Jason gave me the remaining pages and it was like, “Ah! That’s what he’s doing here.” But it is very hard to stand back and say, “Shit, guys … there’s 80 pages here.” We shot it as we went along, and it’s very hard to gauge these things until you put it all together. Six weeks later, something else appears at the other end [in the edit], but it’s also about 10 minutes shorter than it was.

What’s Been Said About Ted Lasso’s Future After Season 3

Ted Lasso’s Future Gets Promising Update From Season 3 Director (Including A Timeline For Its Potential Return)

In the lead up to its premiere, audiences were left largely in the dark on whether Ted Lasso season 3 would actually be the end for the show, with reports indicating that co-creator/star Jason Sudeikis wanted to close things out after a lengthy development cycle. Co-creator and star Brendan Hunt originally stood by Sudeikis’ feeling that the show’s time was done, but has since offered a more confusing update that they haven’t ruled out the possibility for a return after taking a break, echoing what Lowney said above.

Co-star and frequent writer Brett Goldstein has similarly been unclear on where Ted Lasso could go after the emotional season 3 finale, confirming that there are a lot of unresolved storylines that could still be explored, but not outright stating an assurance to continue, while Hannah Waddingham has been open to the possibility of a spinoff centered on her and Juno Temple’s Keeley. On the contrary, Jamie Tartt actor Phil Dunster had a more honest response to the possibility of a season 4, feeling “there’s enough TV around.”

Interestingly, Apple has remained largely quiet on Ted Lasso‘s future, save for a post following the season 3 finale in which the streamer seemingly teased a spinoff centered on Hunt’s Coach Beard, Nick Mohammed’s Nate and Goldstein’s Roy, though was later clarified to not be the case. With the show having helped put eyes on Apple TV+ through its run, it would be understandable to see them try and make a future happen, though not forcing anything from Sudeikis and his team may be just as good of an option.
