The Lord of the Rings Online is free-to-play with some restrictions, but players can get through much of the game without needing to spend money.
J.R.R. Tolkien once wrote, “all that is gold does not glitter,” but in The Lord of the Rings Online, players do not need gold or any other currency to enjoy the game. In fact, now is the perfect time to play The Lord of the Rings Online. The game recently updated its monetization policy, and while some of its content is now locked behind paid purchases, players can still experience much of Middle-earth without having to spend money.
The Lord of the Rings Online was first released in 2007 and has had a steady stream of content updates since then. Initially, it featured a subscription model, where players had to pay monthly to play it. However, that changed in 2010 when LOTRO was first introduced as a free-to-play model with a paid subscription option as well as an in-game store. This differentiated it from many other MMOs requiring subscriptions, like World of Warcraft, which was released just three years earlier.
In an effort to appeal to newer players, a lot of the content in The Lord of The Rings Online that was previously locked behind paywalls was lifted. This happened as a part of update 33, released in April 2022. With this update, much of the older content has now been made completely free. Additionally, some newer content yet to be released will also be free. Despite the game’s age, game servers will not shut down anytime soon, as players can expect a new expansion to release on November 9, 2022. This new content for The Lord of the Rings Online is known as LOTRO’s Before the Shadow Expansion.
Free Player Mode in The Lord of the Rings Online
For players planning to make a character for the first time in The Lord of the Rings Online. There are important things to know about the game’s monetization policy. Free players are limited to 2 characters per server, have only 45 inventory slots, have limited chat features, cannot mail currency, and do not get rest XP which accumulates while players are offline. Free players have fewer options, take longer to level, and have some other restrictions, but most of the paid features are for convenience.
Another essential thing to note is that free players are limited with the quest packs. Quests up to level 95 are free, but they will need to spend money if they want to take on higher-level quests. The level cap is still unrestricted, so free players can reach level 140, which is the current max level, attainable by baking pies in LOTRO. They just won’t be able to do all the quests in The Lord of the Rings Online until they enter paid mode.
