The Lair Trailer Reveals The Descent Director’s Return To Horror Movies

The Lair Trailer Reveals The Descent Director’s Return To Horror Movies

Famed horror director Neil Marshall is officially back in the terror-packed genre with the release of the first official The Lair trailer. Having risen to horror fame with the release of his debut feature film Dog Soldiers in 2002 and The Descent in 2005, Marshall took a genre detour into other genres with the sci-fi film Doomsday and historical action-war pic Centurion. Marshall then dove head first into his role of television director with Game of Thrones, Constantine, Hannibal, Westworld, and Lost In Space before making his way back to the big screen with his 2019 reboot of Hellboy and 2020 film The Reckoning.

    SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

The Lair will focus on a Royal Air Force pilot who takes refuge in an abandoned bunker, which unknowingly releases half human, half alien beings, following her plane being shot down in Afghanistan. It was previously announced that The Lair would see Charlotte Kirk lead the cast as Capt. Kate Sinclair along with Mark Arends as Pvt. Dwayne Everett, and Hadi Khanjanpour as Kabir, Jonathan Howard, Jamie Bamber, Tanji Kibong, Leon Ockenden and Mark Strepan. Production on The Lair kicked off in mid-2021, and now after making its premiere at this year’s FrightFest, audiences are getting their first glimpse at the action-horror movie.

As the Halloween season kicks off, RLJE Films has revealed the first official The Lair trailer. The video offers the first look at The Descent director Neil Marshall’s latest return to the horror genre as a team of combat soldiers discover an underground facility filled with monstrous beings intent on killing anything in sight. Check out the trailer above:

What To Expect From The Lair

    The Lair Monster

The upcoming horror movie The Lair will be reuniting Marshall and Kirk following their 2020 sorceress film The Reckoning, of which Marshall and Kirk co-wrote the screenplay for along with Edward Evers-Swindell. The Lair will also see Marshall and Kirk sharing the screenwriting duties, and will again see Kirk as the film’s leading star in a matchup that’s quickly becoming a Marshall horror staple. Should the two continue to collaborate on other genre projects, they would be following in the footsteps of The Haunting of Hill House‘s Mike Flanagan and Kate Siegel, who has appeared in nearly every one of his projects since 2013’s Oculus.

The Lair trailer is already evoking similar feelings to The Descent in its claustrophobic fashion, along with an extreme visual absence of light, offering Marshall fans a small taste of genre nostalgia and sparking hope that his upcoming horror movie will be an instant hit among genre and Marshall fans. The Lair will be available in theaters, on digital, and on demand starting October 28. Shudder has also acquired rights to the upcoming film, with it expected to hit the streamer sometime in 2023.
