The first trailer for the stand-alone sequel Twisters, which touched down during Super Bowl LVIII, puts Glen Powell, Daisy Edgar-Jones and Anthony Ramos in the middle of the weather-related peril.
Lee Isaac Chung‘s action film hits theaters July 19 from Universal Pictures. It is a follow-up to director Jan de Bont’s fondly remembered 1996 flick Twister that starred Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton as two storm chasers who tempt fate while trying to develop a new weather alert system.
Twisters co-stars Kiernan Shipka, David Corenswet, Sasha Lane, Maura Tierney, Katy O’Brian, Brandon Perea, Daryl McCormack, Harry Hadden-Paton, Nik Dodani and Tunde Adebimpe.
Chung (Minari) directs from Mark L. Smith’s script that is based on characters originated by Michael Crichton and Anne-Marie Martin, who wrote the 1996 movie. Patrick Crowley, Kathleen Kennedy, Frank Marshall and Steven Spielberg serve as producers on Twisters.
During production on the film last year, McCormack told The Hollywood Reporter that he was “absolutely terrified” by the original Twister when he saw it at a younger age. He also explained why Chung is a good fit to revisit the world of the first film.
“When I heard that they were doing a remake, I thought, ‘Oh, my God, that’s a lot of pressure on this because the first one did so well,’” McCormack said at the time. “But I think Lee Isaac Chung is such an interesting choice because he’s a really sensitive director. I don’t see how he can make a film like this and not make it feel intimate, so that’s what I’m excited about.”
