Lance Barber reacts to George Cooper’s nearing death in the CBS comedy Young Sheldon as dictated by established canon in The Big Bang Theory.
Lance Barber comments on George’s nearing death in Young Sheldon, which returns for season 6 later this year. The CBS comedy is currently on its annual break, but when it returns for a new batch of episodes, Sheldon will be 13 years old. That means that in just a year, as revealed in the parent series The Big Band Theory, his dad will meet his end.
George was the only Cooper family member who didn’t physically appear in the geek-centric sitcom’s 12-year-run. By the time The Big Bang Theory began in 2007, he was already long dead. Despite this, both Sheldon and Mary liked to share stories about their late patriarch, albeit mostly bad ones, giving the character a bad rap. So, when Young Sheldon properly introduced him, there has been some confusion as the prequel’s version of George may not be perfect but isn’t the lazy and drunk father that his son and wife liked to describe him as. Five years later, this remains the biggest inconsistency between The Big Bang Theory and Young Sheldon. Given the lack of resolution, there are some doubts if the spin-off is even pushing forward with George’s pre-determined death.
Speaking with ET, Barber opens up about his character’s nearing demise in Young Sheldon. Asked if this worries him, he says not really because he has known all along that this is coming. Luckily, he still has some time to spend in the CBS comedy. Read Barber’s quote below:
It doesn’t worry me because we’ve known from the beginning. I’ve been blessed and so lucky to have all the time that we’ve had already, and know that we’re gonna have a little more time to play out this story.
Before his death, George is also due for his fall from grace based on what was established in The Big Bang Theory. Sheldon infamously told Penny that when he was 13, he came home early from school and caught his dad having sexual relations with another woman. They never talked about it until George died. This was undoubtedly the most heartbreaking experience of Sheldon’s childhood and it shaped him in ways beyond knocking three times. If CBS is adamant about reconciling its contradicting versions of George, chances are that they would have to go through with this transformation before ultimately killing him.
In any case, it seems like Barber has been informed from the get-go that his character will die in Young Sheldon before the show actually ends. Given the CBS comedy’s popularity, chances are that the network would be inclined to have it on the air past the Cooper patriarch’s demise and shift its focus on the titular character as he transitions into the character fans loved in The Big Bang Theory. In the meantime, however, viewers still have time to spend with George as Young Sheldon season 6 premieres later this year on CBS.
