From Red Carpets to Creature FX: Sabrina Ozuna Shares the Makeup Secrets That Built Her A-List Career

“Working with celebrities can feel like stepping into a whirlwind of cameras, glitz, and pressure, but for me, it’s never about the spotlight. It’s about one simple goal: making my clients feel confident, comfortable, and camera-ready, every single time.”

These reflections come from professional makeup artist Sabrina Ozuna, shared during an exciting interview with Social Lifestyle Magazine. She has worked with many Red Carpet favorites, including Tori Spelling, David Lascher, Trina McGee, Lizzo, and others, and is exactly the makeup artist an A-list client calls for her professional expertise. But who is Sabrina Ozuna beyond these red carpet highlights?

According to her website, with over 17 years of experience, Sabrina Ozuna has built a career working with A-list clients and on major productions for Netflix, Lifetime, and Amazon Prime, showcasing her versatility on red carpets and screen sets.

She shared, “When I’m working with a new client, I always take the time to do my homework. I’ll look through their social media or past photos to get a sense of their aesthetic; maybe they love a bold lip or a soft eye. Then, when I meet them, I can say, ‘I noticed you seem to love this kind of look. Does that feel right for today?’ Clients appreciate that I took the time to notice. It instantly builds trust.”

It is also important to remember, she says, “My process is simple: listen, listen, listen. I can’t stress that enough. Clients will always tell you what they want, even if they’re not speaking in traditional makeup artist terms. They’ll say things like, ‘I just want to feel fresh on camera,’ or ‘I don’t want to look too overdone.’ When you really listen, you can translate those feelings into a look that brings their vision to life.”

She also recognizes the importance of empathy for any industry, including the artistic world. She acknowledges, “For me, artistry is just one part of the job. The other, and often the most underrated, is empathy: really being present, hearing your client, and tuning in to how they want to feel. That emotional connection is what makes the difference.”

Ozuna takes note of all the roles that a makeup artist plays in the Hollywood scene. She feels, “Makeup connects to everything on set, including lighting, wardrobe, and camera. Communication is key. I always want the director and crew to feel confident that the makeup department is completely handled. My goal is for them to never have to think twice about it.”

She recognizes the importance of preparation, saying, “I’m very open and collaborative. I introduce myself to everyone so they know they can come to me for anything. And honestly, I’ll jump in wherever I’m needed. I’ve helped steam costumes; I’ve held reflectors; I do whatever it takes to make the day run smoothly. Even under tight time constraints, I make sure we finish early so makeup is never the reason we are behind.”

When discussing how she adjusts a look for different shoots, I asked Sabrina how she communicates this with clients. She explains, “They are completely different worlds. With on-screen work, the makeup has to look flawless from every angle and under every kind of lighting. You do not get a second chance; what is on camera is what the audience sees. I’m always checking the monitor and using different light sources to make sure everything reads correctly in real time.”

From flawless red carpet glam to terrifying creature transformations, makeup can take you anywhere, and Sabrina Ozuna has mastered both worlds. She takes readers behind the scenes, explaining what makes her process unique: “Special effects makeup and beauty makeup are completely different worlds. I’ve been doing this for 17 years, and for about three of those, the majority of my work was special effects, sculpting custom prosthetics out of my garage and creating full creature looks. These days, my focus is mostly beauty, but I still love the artistry behind both.”

She teaches me that, “The main difference is that SFX makeup is much more unpredictable. Things can go wrong quickly; adhesives may not stick, materials can react to heat, or silicone can behave differently than expected. Just this Halloween, I was working on a ‘fish wife’ and a creepy Gorton’s Fisherman look, and when one prosthetic wouldn’t adhere, I had to pivot and come up with a plan B on the spot. That happens all the time in SFX, so you have to be quick, adaptable, and creative under pressure.”

Anyone seeking a makeup artist expert can feel at ease with Ozuna. As she explains, “No matter how long I’ve worked with someone, I always remind them that feedback is welcome. Makeup is easy to adjust; a lash can move a millimeter, a lip tone can shift slightly, and those little tweaks are what make them feel their absolute best.”

She balances emotion with professionalism, stating, “Of course, it can be surreal working with people I grew up watching, but I never lose sight of why I’m there. I love what I do, and I put my heart into every look. I think that genuine care, truly wanting my clients to feel good rather than simply look good, is what keeps me grounded and creatively inspired.”

As for her motivation behind the craft, she is thrilled to remind readers, “My artistic aesthetic is always evolving. I love staying aware of trends, even if I don’t always follow them, because inspiration can come from anywhere. I’ve always been drawn to expressive eyes, lashes, and blush; those elements let me be the most creative. After 17 years, I still see myself as a sponge; I’m always learning. Even a tip from someone newer in the industry can teach me something fresh, and that’s what keeps me excited about what I do.”

Are you thinking of becoming a makeup artist? Her advice is powerful. She says, “This industry has its ebbs and flows, especially when you are freelance and doing it all on your own, with no union and no representation, just drive and heart. But that is why it is so important to remember why you started. If you are truly passionate about it, that passion will carry you through the tough days. It’s the simplest advice in the world, but it is also the truest one: never give up.”

Thank you to professional makeup artist Sabrina Ozuna for an incredible interview with Social Lifestyle Magazine. Sabrina offers a full range of services, including beauty, special effects, grooming, and more, bringing her expertise to every project. Her passion and dedication are truly inspiring, encouraging readers to explore the makeup industry and pursue their creative dreams.
