It’s one of the most humble pieces in any wardrobe—and arguably the most iconic. The white button-down shirt is a mainstay of fashion that transcends trends. Timeless, effortlessly wearable, and endlessly adaptable, it’s the answer to nearly every outfit scenario I can dream up.

Each morning, part of getting dressed is asking myself how I want to feel. Comfortable? Polished? Warm? Cool? Sporty with white sneakers? Feminine? The white button-down says yes to them all. More than anything, it’s easy to wear, easy to style, and always feels right. Submitting to a daily uniform has become one of the small kindnesses I give myself—and it’s why I don’t mind the ever-growing row of crisp button-downs hanging in my closet.

A Brief History of the White Button-Down

Brooks Brothers claims the title of inventor of the button-down collared shirt, but it was Coco Chanel who introduced the silhouette to women’s fashion in the 1940s. On her runway, the once-masculine staple became decidedly feminine—tucked tight at the waist, highlighting shape and structure.

From there, the white button-down secured its place in fashion history. Think Audrey Hepburn riding a scooter through Rome in Roman Holiday, Diane Keaton’s androgynous turn in Annie Hall, and Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy’s crisp minimalist ’90s uniform. Each woman interpreted it differently, yet all made it look timeless.

The shirt’s enduring appeal lies in its endless versatility. There’s the effortless artist—oversized, sleeves pushed up. The minimalist—half-tucked, collar open. The coastal muse—thrown over a swimsuit, sun-kissed and undone. And of course, the off-duty elegance of wearing it unbuttoned at the end of the day, glass of wine in hand.

What to Look For in the Perfect White Button-Down

A great white shirt looks simple, but the construction is what makes it a lasting piece. Fabric, fit, and finish all play a part in how it wears, washes, and drapes on your body. Here’s what to keep in mind when shopping for your forever favorite.

    Fabric

Start with what you want it to feel like. Look for natural fibers whenever possible—they breathe better and age beautifully.

    • Cotton poplin: Crisp and polished—ideal for workdays or when you want that structured “just-pressed” look.
    • Linen: Lightweight and breathable, perfect for warm weather or layering over a tank. Embrace a little wrinkling (it’s part of the charm).
    • Silk or Tencel: Adds drape and movement for a softer, more elevated feel.
    • Oxford cloth: Slightly heavier and textured, giving that borrowed-from-the-guys appeal.

    Fit

The best white button-downs should skim, not cling. When in doubt, size up for ease and roll your sleeves to keep the look intentional, not sloppy.

    • Classic: Tailored through the waist for tucking into trousers or skirts.
    • Relaxed or oversized: The modern favorite—works just as well half-tucked with denim as open over swimwear.
    • Cropped or boxy: A newer proportion that pairs perfectly with high-waisted pants.

    Details

Small choices make a big difference.

    • Buttons: Mother-of-pearl or tonal buttons look elevated; avoid anything shiny or plastic-looking.
    • Collar: A structured collar holds its shape; a softer one feels effortless.
    • Hemline: Curved hems are flattering when untucked, while straight hems give a more architectural line.
    • Back pleat: Adds subtle shape and comfort through the shoulders.

    Opacity

The perfect white shirt shouldn’t require a backup tank top. Hold the fabric to the light—if it’s paper-thin, pass. Opt for slightly thicker cotton blends or double-weave linens that stay opaque while still feeling airy.

    The 9 Best White Button-Downs

We’ve done the work (and plenty of laundry) to find the perfect ones. Each of these editor-curated picks has earned a permanent spot in our own closets—pieces we reach for on repeat, season after season. From crisp cotton classics to relaxed linen blends, these are the white button-downs we wear, love, and wholeheartedly recommend.

How to Thrift a White Button-Down

Some of my favorite button-downs are thrifted and quite literally borrowed from the guys. I like to start in the men’s section for a silhouette that’s both modern and classic. Look for men’s Oxfords or linen shirts in natural fibers. Check collars, buttons, and underarms for wear. A slightly oversized fit always feels intentional—especially when paired with tailored trousers or cutoffs. And you can almost always find gently worn or even new options of the shirts above on Poshmark or eBay if you prefer the thrill of the online hunt.

How to Keep Your Whites Bright and Crisp

If you’ve ever watched your once-white shirt fade to dull gray—or worse, stain—you’re not alone. Treat spills immediately (I swear by this stain remover), and wash whites separately to prevent color transfer. Adding a laundry booster or oxygen-based bleach once in a while helps maintain that bright, fresh feel year after year.

For a deeper dive, see our guide on how to keep whites white (it’s easier than you think).

The Shirt That You Can Wear Forever

Every time I slip into a white button-down, I’m reminded that style doesn’t have to be complicated. The right shirt does it all—it moves from coffee runs to dinners out, feels good against the skin, and somehow always fits the mood. It’s the definition of ease, and proof that the best pieces are often the simplest.
