Jeans are the foundation of any fall wardrobe: They provide the perfect base for slim turtlenecks and chunky knits, look great with boots, and lend a laid-back edge to jackets, blazers, and coats of all kinds. Ahead, we’ve gathered six denim styles we’re looking forward to wearing when the weather cools down.
THE FASHION JEAN
Always directional, often daring, and occasionally even divisive, the fashion jean is admittedly not for everyone. If you’re willing to take a risk, we recommend curved-leg jeans (defined by their kinked outseam) or tapered jeans with a twist, like this pin-tucked Toteme pair.
THE RETRO JEAN
Between the light wash and the swishy wide-leg cut, these jeans look straight out of the ’70s. Fading atop the thighs gives them the well-loved, lived-in look of vintage denim.

THE HIGH-RISE JEAN
A high rise is generally defined as anything from 10 to 14 inches. Your perfect number will depend on how long your torso is, but in general, you want the waistband to come up to your belly button.

THE BAGGY JEAN
If you’re into streetwear, stealing your SO’s clothes, or just being comfortable, then baggy jeans are your best bet. These are meant to be worn low across the hips; you may want to size up once (or even twice) to get the right amount of slouch.

THE COMFORT JEAN
When you have oat lattes to sip and farmers’ market produce to peruse, you want jeans you can wear—happily—for hours. The key is fit (look for something relaxed rather than restrictive) and fabric (a touch of elastane makes a world of difference).
THE DARK JEAN
While light-blue denim can read too casual for evening, a grey or indigo wash works well, especially with the right styling choices. Both of these options have a high rise and wide legs, which give you a nice A-line silhouette you can build around. Offset the volume with a slim top or bodysuit and cute heels.
