Doja Cat’s ‘Vie’: All 15 Tracks Ranked

“Lipstain” offers more of the glossy ’80s pop that floods through Vie, but by track nine the tricks of the album’s trade start to feel a little stale. “Lipstain” doesn’t add any new flair to the album, with Doja instead rapping and singing on a steady cruise control.

While “Acts of Service” sports a lush lo-fi, woozy beat courtesy of Jack Antonoff, the song’s slow cadence results in a surprising low point on Vie. Doja raps with a matter of fact staccato about her preferred love language, and by the end sounds kind of sleepy at the idea of love in general.

One of the last trap-leaning ballads on the record, Doja asks her person if she can have a do over on “Make It Up.” The hook becomes fairly repetitive by it’s third outing, even as Doja doles out some playful ideas about how to “make it up” to her disgruntled lover. “Can I run your shower?” “Can I fill the tub?” she raps.

Doja makes one final attempt to win back her lover on “Come Back,” ending Vie on a bright, sun-soaked note before bidding farewell. The singer-rapper closes her fifth record with a feisty and euphoric track that examines her role in the relationship she’s chased throughout much of the album. “If we keep this up, and you hold my doors/ And you take my bag, and you hold me more/ I don’t think that would make up for the hope I lost,” she reflects, leaving the resolution of her pursuit ambiguous. Did she end up with the one she was chasing, or did she let them go? The answer remains just out of reach.

Doja taps into her inner Prince across the steady drums and galactic synths of “Couples Therapy.” The slippery and subdued track hits at first, floating along as the Scarlet rapper drops a few seductive bars, but the ending feels fairly abrupt and leaves the listener wanting more.

“One More Time” is a welcomed change of pace from the ballads “Acts of Service” and “Make It Up” that came before, as Doja slips right back into some vibrant ’80s energy for one last go-round. A high point on the song comes at the tail end of the second verse, where Doja uplifts the energy into a euphoric cloud burst of glitchy synths and sugary autotune howls. The point is, there’s a lot of fun to be had on “One More Time.”

“Stranger” carries the same compelling vibe as Vie‘s other standout tracks, with its groovy synths, Doja’s seamless blend of rapping and singing, and a disco-inspired drum kick driving the beat. However, while the ingredients are all there, the track doesn’t hit as hard as others on the project. It glides by smoothly but leaves little lasting impact.

Doja questions the happiness of her ex in Vie‘s slinky, penultimate track “Happy.” Hearing Doja sing in French is a treat, as she questions the validity of what her ex has got going on: “She looked just like a best friend/ Was it friendship you were chasing?” she sings. Sure, Doja may be gaslighting, but when it sounds this sweet who can complain?

“All Mine” keeps the good times rollin’, with Doja again traversing a newly formed love affair with lyrics dedicated to Grand Theft Auto 6 and eating the rich. The track’s airy backdrop with its twinkling keys maintain the consistently light and buoyant energy of Vie, serving as a good interlude for the album’s final few songs.

Unsurprisingly, “Silly! Fun!” is silly and fun. Doja’s mischief comes alive on Vie‘s tenth track, with the Californian bouncing in between seductive rapping and singing like a whimsical, lovestruck Wile E. Coyote. “Wouldn’t it be fun if we went to a party?” Doja coos, before asking her love interest if they should have kids. “Silly! Fun!” is an especially whimsical listening experience.

“Cards” is a funky and versatile track that has Doja swapping between playful rap bars and a catchy hook. The beat embodies the smooth bounce of MJ’s Bad without being too imitative, and serves as a good appetizer for what fans can expect on Vie: much more lighthearted vibes and Doja Cat just having a good time.

A fitting follow-up to “Kiss Me More,” SZA and Doja reunite for an equally as effervescent disco love song on “Take Me Dancing.” Their chemistry on a track once again culminate in a pop song that hits like a blast of air conditioning on a hot summer day, even in September.

“Gorgeous” is pure joy. The moody, kaleidoscopic beat twists and turns, perfectly complementing Doja as she revels in her own beauty and the beauty of the women around her. Fully in her element, she cruises effortlessly through the track, radiating confidence and charisma from start to finish.

Doja sounds like she’s bursting at the seams on “AAHH MEN!” Flipping between rapping and singing with the manic energy of early-day Blondie, Doja makes a complex, man-wary anthem so catchy and big it could easily both fill up stadiums and fit snuggly on the Barbie 2 soundtrack.

Doja returns to her Hot Pink roots in full on “Jealous Type,” a slick pop track that is by far one of the best tracks on the record. She sounds simultaneously in control and nonchalant, cooing along about how jealous she is while the ’80s-infused beat gently pushes her along. It was a good choice for a lead single, perfectly encapsulating the energy that fills Vie.
