BLACKPINK is (still) the revolution! On July 5, the girl group’s label YG Entertainment announced that the quartet are on the precipice of a brand-new musical era.
“A lot of BLACKPINK-esque music has been prepared over a long period of time,” the label said in a statement. “On top of new music and large-scale projects, BLACKPINK will also go on the largest world tour in the history of a K-pop girl group by the end of the year to expand their rapport with fans worldwide.”
New music by the K-pop idols will serve as a follow-up to their 2020 debut studio effort The Album, which bowed at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 upon its hotly anticipated release back in October 2020 and featured smash singles “How You Like That,” “Ice Cream” featuring Selena Gomez and “Lovesick Girls.” The group also unveiled their Netflix documentary BLACKPINK: Light Up the Sky in the wake of the LP’s success.
Between albums, both Rosé and Lisa debuted solo projects of their own: R and Lalisa, respectively. While the latter’s single album contained the namesake track and its B-side “Money,” Rosé’s lead single “On the Ground” peaked at No. 70 on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming the highest-charting entry by a female Korean solo artist in the chart’s history.
And while fans are still waiting clamoring for Jisoo’s eventual solo musical debut, the sole South Korea native of the girl group landed her very first leading role in Korean drama Snowdrop back in late 2021. (Jennie, of course, went solo first back in 2018 with the appropriately titled “Solo.”)
