The revelations in Britney Spears’ new memoir keep coming. In the latest excerpt from The Woman in Me to go viral, the pop star looked back on her time hanging out with old flame Justin Timberlake and his band *NSYNC, who Spears believed “tried too hard” to fit in with Black artists back in the early aughts.
*NSYNC, of course, blew up as hip-hop was at the beginning of its decades-long reign at the top of the music industry, which is presumably why Spears writes that Timberlake and co. were eager to pal around with rappers. “*NSYNC was what people back then called ‘so pimp,’” the singer writes in her memoir. “They were white boys, but they loved hip hop. To me, that’s what separated them from the Backstreet Boys, who seemed very consciously to position themselves as a white group.”
Spears continues, “*NYNC hung out with Black artists. Sometimes, I thought they tried too hard to fit in. One day, J and I were in New York, going to parts of town I’d never been to before. Walking our way was a guy with a huge, blinged out medallion. He was flanked by two giant security guards. J got all excited and said so loud, ‘Oh yeah, fo shiz, fo shiz! Ginuwine! What’s up, homie?”
To make this cringe-inducing anecdote even worse, the audio version of Spears’ memoir is narrated by Michelle Williams, who was forced (against her will, presumably) to imitate Timberlake trying to play it cool with Ginuwine. Listen to a clip of the story — if you dare — below.
The Woman in Me only officially hit stands today (October 24th), but Spears’ long-awaited memoir has already churned up plenty of headlines — particularly with the confession that she had an abortion during her relationship with Timberlake.
