DeSantis Spokeswoman Calls to End Tax Exemptions For Social Justice Nonprofits, After Liberals Push to Tax Churches

DeSantis Spokeswoman Calls to End Tax Exemptions For Social Justice Nonprofits, After Liberals Push to Tax Churches

Christina Pushaw, Press Secretary to Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and a burgeoning star in her own right, fired back at liberals pushing to remove tax exemptions for churches, suggesting their social justice nonprofits should meet the same fate.

Pushaw was responding to former Los Angeles Times writer David Lazarus, who took exception to recent news that the Archbishop of San Francisco had banned House Speaker Nancy Pelosi from receiving Holy Communion due to her public pro-abortion stance.

“Should you not publicly repudiate your advocacy for abortion ‘rights’ … I would have no choice but to make a declaration … that you are not to be admitted to Holy Communion,” Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone wrote to her in a letter.

“It’s time we ended tax exemption for religions,” Lazarus remarked. “If they want to play politics, make them pay the price.”

Pushaw responded to Lazarus’ plan by suggesting the left might be opening up a can of worms that won’t end up in their favor.

“If Dems want to play this game, it’s time to end tax exemptions for their religion (wokeism) too,” she shot back. “Yes, that means all their ‘social justice’ nonprofits, the ACLU, Ford Foundation, etc.”

The most obvious place to start here, since Lazarus believes the church’s stance that against killing babies is ‘politics,’ would be to start eliminating the tax-exempt status of Planned Parenthood.

Funny, Planned Parenthood isn’t taxed either, and they’re ALWAYS doing political stuff. Maybe take their tax exempt status away????? pic.twitter.com/DUu5wdrCBp

They Go After Churches Because Churches Are More In Line With Republicans

Sure, Lazarus and the other liberals on social media attacking the tax-exempt status of churches could easily be dismissed as retribution for the Archbishop banning Pelosi from communion.

But perhaps there’s something deeper here.

For instance, in June of 2021, the IRS (Internal Revenue Service) rejected the tax-exempt application for a Christian non-profit group in Texas allegedly in part because their teachings of the Bible and educational efforts are “typically affiliated” with the Republican Party.

“Specifically, you educate Christians on what the Bible says in areas where they can be instrumental including the areas of sanctity of life, the definition of marriage, biblical justice, freedom of speech, defense, and borders and immigration, U.S. and Israel relations,” a letter from the IRS stated.

“The bible teachings are typically affiliated with Republican party and its candidates.”

The IRS denied a religious group tax-exempt status with the excuse that certain Christian principals promote and endorse Republicans. https://t.co/toZ5NpVBbt

The IRS later reversed its decision upon appeal.

But the fact that they viewed the teachings of God as more affiliated with the Republican Party in America than the Democrats speaks volumes.

GOP lawmakers warned at the time that the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) could start taxing churches based on that reasoning.

“If the IRS applied this interpretation broadly, it would jeopardize the tax-exempt status of thousands of Christian churches across the country,” they said in a letter.

How long before they again use politics to mess with the tax status of churches out of spite over the potential Roe v. Wade decision?
