Donald Trump took aim at former Vice President Mike Pence after the latter broke with him by endorsing Georgia Governor Brian Kemp at a campaign rally.
“When you say yes to Governor Brian Kemp tomorrow, you will send a deafening message all across America that the Republican Party is the party of the future,” Pence told a massive crowd a few hundred people at an airport north of Atlanta on Monday.
The former veep touting Kemp’s candidacy in the primary is a direct rebuke of Trump, who has vociferously opposed the Georgia governor ever since the 2020 presidential election and his refusal to support election fraud claims.
Trump has backed Kemp’s primary challenger, former Georgia Senator David Perdue, who by all accounts is far behind in the primary race.
In his statement endorsing Perdue, Trump called Kemp a “failure” who “can’t win because the MAGA base — which is enormous — will never vote for him.”
“When Brian Kemp called me and asked me to come out here and be with all of you, I said yes in a heartbeat,” Pence said at the rally.

Former President Donald Trump fired back at Pence following his appearance at the Kemp campaign rally, calling him a ‘disappointment.’
In a television interview with “Real America’s Voice” on Monday, Trump again hammered Pence for not intervening in the 2020 electoral process.
“I’m very disappointed in Mike, as a lot of people are. And he just greatly disappointed me,” he explained. “He had a great opportunity, and all he had to do was send it back to the legislatures … let them decide.”
Trump’s comments are in reference to his assertion that the former Vice President had the ability to challenge the election results.

Pence Says There Was Nothing He Could Do
Pence has already made a pointed rebuke of the notion that he could have rejected the electoral votes of some states during the 2020 presidential election.
“There are those in our party who believe that as the presiding officer over the joint session of Congress, I possessed unilateral authority to reject Electoral College votes. And I heard this week that President Trump said I had the right to ‘overturn the election,’” Pence said at a Federalist Society event in February.
“President Trump is wrong,” he said in a direct denunciation. “I had no right to overturn the election.”

Former President Trump responded to those comments with a statement replete with name-calling and continued insistence that the 2020 presidential election was stolen.
“Just saw Mike Pence’s statement on the fact that he had no right to do anything with respect to the Electoral Vote Count,” Trump fired back.
He accused the former Vice President of being “an automatic conveyor belt for the Old Crow Mitch McConnell to get Biden elected President as quickly as possible.”

Trump’s endorsement, typically a powerful political tool in favor of the recipient, seems to be having little effect on Perdue’s campaign.
Kemp is leading handily in the polls.
Pence meanwhile, has hinted at a potential run for the White House in 2024.
