Doorway Photographed by NASA’s Mars Curiosity Rover May Just be a Natural Formation

Remember the alleged doorway on Mars captured by NASA’s Curiosity rover? Well, if you look at the zoomed out picture taken by its Mastcam, it appears to be more like a natural formation rather than something built by an intelligent extraterrestrial civilization.

Despite Curiosity’s Mastcam being nearly a decade old, it’s still capable of capturing multiple spectra and true-color imaging with two cameras. These cameras are able to capture true-color images at 1600×1200 pixels and up to 10 frames per second hardware-compressed video at 720p (1280×720). Each one has 8GB of flash memory, good for storing over 5,500 raw images, thanks to its ability to apply real time lossless data compression.

We’ve been traversing through an area that has formed from ancient sand dunes. These sand dunes were cemented together over time, creating the sandstone outcrops Curiosity is passing by,” said Ashwin Vasavada, Senior Scientist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory at Caltech.
