Innovative Underwater Drone Has Suction Disc Inspired by Remora Fish to Help it Conserve Energy
Researchers from Beihang University, Imperial College London, and Swiss Federal Laboratories have developed an underwater drone with a suction disc inspired by remora fish. This design not only helps the unmanned aerial vehicle conserve energy, but also allows it to hitchhike. In other words, the ability to fly, swim, and attach to surfaces in both air as well as water, seamlessly switching between the two.

Its hydrostatically enhanced hitchhiking device was inspired by the morphology of a remora disc, which is functional in both the air and water. This drone has separate lamellar compartments for redundant sealing, allowing it to achieve adhesion and hitchhike with only partial disc attachment. Passively morphing propellers unfold in the air and fold underwater in just 0.35-seconds for seamless mode switching. Combine this with AI and the possibilities are endless, just like how this algorithm removes water from underwater images.

DJI Mini SE – Camera Drone with 3-Axis Gimbal, 2.7K Camera, GPS, 30-min Flight Time, Reduced Weight, Less Than 0.55lbs / 249 gram Mini Drone, Improved Scale 5 Wind Resistance, Gray

    • Light as a Smartphone – Weighing less than 0 55lbs / 249 grams, DJI Mini SE is roughly the same weight as the smartphone. In the United States and Canada, you can fly this camera drone without the need to register your drone with the local government.
    • Capture on the Go – The lightweight and powerful DJI Mini SE camera drone is the ideal for creators on the move. The ultra-portable design allows you to effortlessly capture moments in unforgettable ways.
    • More Time in the Sky – DJI Mini SE’s weight allows it to stay in the air longer than similar consumer drones on the market. Enjoy up to 30 minutes of flight time with a fully-charged battery.
    • Capture the Detail – DJI Mini SE supports 12MP aerial photos and 2.7K HD videos. A 3-axis motorized gimbal provides superior camera stability and ensures clear ultra-smooth footage.
    • Upgraded Wind Resistance – DJI Mini SE can resist 29-38kph winds and take off at a max altitude of 4,000 meters, so your footage is stable even when flying along a windy coastline or high above an alpine forest.

In field tests, we show that the robot can record video in both media and move objects across the air/water boundary in a mountain stream and the ocean. We envision that this study can pave the way for future robots with autonomous biological detection, monitoring, and tracking capabilities in a wide variety of aerial-aquatic environments,” said the researchers.
