Toyota and its subsidiary, Woven Planet, have debuted a portable hydrogen cartridge prototype for smart cities. Put simply, its cartridge design will help make everyday transport and supply of hydrogen energy power far more accessible for various daily life applications both inside and outside of the home. The two companies will conduct Proof of Concept (“PoC”) trials in various places, including Woven City, Toyota’s smart city, which is currently being constructed in Susono City, Shizuoka Prefecture.
Measuring 400mm (16″) in length x 180mm (7″) in diameter, each one of these hydrogen cartridges are designed to be affordable, while still providing convenient energy that makes it possible to bring hydrogen to where people live, work, and play without using pipes. They can be quickly swapped out or replaced and charged. It would allow small-scale infrastructure to meet energy demands in remote and non-electrified areas or be swiftly dispatched in case of emergency. The future of aircraft may also be hydrogen-powered, starting with the Airbus MAVERIC.
