General Hospital star Maurice Benard is all about protecting his mental health. He sent a strong message to fans after online hate. But he wasn’t getting the hate. The actor showed support for a co-star amid an intense storyline on the ABC soap. Keep reading for more details on the situation.
General Hospital Cameron Mathison Reveals Devastating Side Effects Of Online Trolling
Maurice Benard has been on General Hospital for a long time. He’s been loved and hated by viewers for decades. One of his co-stars has been struggling with online hate from fans after his character took a villainous turn. Cameron Mathison is a beloved Hallmark star who gained a lot of fans as Ryan Lavery on All My Children. While there was one storyline involving Ryan that fans didn’t like, the actor was mostly well-received.
General Hospital fans have been less welcoming to Cameron Mathison. He took over the role of Drew Cain in 2021. But the character took a major villain turn earlier this year. First, he slept with his nephew Michael’s wife, Willow. Then he tried to steal the Quartermaine mansion from his family after Monica’s death.
Fans rooted for the character to die when Drew was shot in September. But some viewers have taken their hatred of the character as an excuse to attack the actor. Unfortunately, it’s not just him who is affected.
Cameron Mathison took to Instagram to share an unexpected consequence of hateful comments. It isn’t just hurting him. It’s also hurting his daughter, Leila. He revealed that his daughter FaceTimed him to watch clips of General Hospital. After graduating high school last year, Leila Mathison left Los Angeles, California, to attend college in Paris.
In the FaceTime video with her dad, she became visibly upset over the hateful comments aimed at the actor. “Just posting this as a gentle reminder that when we make comments on social media, these people have kids and families and friends and are real people. Remember everyone, it’s just a character and I’m just doing my job,” he wrote in the caption.
Cameron Mathison received a lot of support from fans. Several of his co-stars also spoke up on his behalf. Rory Gibson, who took over as Michael earlier this year, wrote, “The most kind, chill, generous guy on set.”
But his biggest defender was Maurice Benard.
Maurice Benard Sends Strong Message To Fans About Co-Star
As an advocate for mental health awareness, the actor knows exactly the toll social media can take. He jumped into the comments of his co-stars post to send a strong message to General Hospital fans.
“If you mess with Cameron, you’re gonna have to mess with me and I don’t think you wanna do that,” Maurice Benard wrote.
Several fans of the soap joked that the actor was channeling his mob boss character, Sonny Corinthos. Drew and Sonny are fierce rivals, but off-screen, Maurice Benard and Cameron Mathison are close friends. And you don’t let trolls mess with your friends.
