Halloween Ends’ Christine Tease Can Fix A Hated Kills Storyline

Halloween Ends’ Christine Tease Can Fix A Hated Kills Storyline

Halloween Kills seemingly teased a repetitive end to the franchise, but recent plot details surrounding Halloween Ends suggest otherwise.

Comments comparing Halloween Ends to another John Carpenter classic, Christine, may provide the latest Halloween trilogy with a satisfying conclusion. The previous installment, Halloween Kills, sparked some controversy by attempting to subvert audience expectations by introducing some complex and progressive themes into its narrative. Following a vengeful Tommy Doyle rallying up the town of Haddonfield to take down Michael Myers once and for all, Halloween Kills fell flat in its cautionary tale of revenge, failing to do anything truly innovative with the slasher genre.

However, despite the criticisms surrounding the Halloween Kills mob storyline, director David Gordon Green appears to plan to explore how Michael’s evil has plagued the town even further in the final installment, Halloween Ends. Speaking to Empire’s Spoiler Special Podcast in 2021, David Gordon Green stated that he had to ask John Carpenter if the script felt too much like Christine, another film directed by Carpenter based on the Stephen King book of the same name. Christine follows a young man named Arnie who restores an old car that, unbeknownst to him, has a demonic presence attached to it, which clings to Arnie and eventually corrupts him, creating a dangerous force to be reckoned with. This comparison suggests that a character in Halloween Ends will follow a similar plotline to Arnie but instead be tainted by Michael Myers.

While fan theories have speculated that Laurie Strode’s granddaughter, Allyson, will become corrupted by Michael Myers, recent plot details suggest a different character will fill this role. Halloween Ends is set to introduce a new character, Corey Cunningham, who is accused of murdering a child he was babysitting. This could ultimately mean that Corey could become obsessed with Michael Myers, similar to Arnie’s obsession with his car in Christine, which could lead him down a path of evil and destruction. Combining this with the angle that Halloween Kills attempted to take by highlighting the impacts of violence on a community provides the perfect opportunity to flesh out this narrative further and create an impactful conclusion to the trilogy.

Michael Myers Inspiring Corey Would Be Better Than Halloween Kills’ Mob

If Halloween Ends does see a Michael Myers-inspired Corey Cunningham terrorizing the streets of Haddonfield, this will give audiences a compelling view of just how far Michael Myers’ evil nature has plagued the town. While the mob in Halloween Kills failed to deliver this message due to how chaotic and misplaced it felt within the story, Halloween Ends focusing solely on the psychological corruption of one character would do more to provide a focused and fleshed-out storyline. Ultimately, Halloween Ends could offer a new angle to Christine, transforming the supernatural possession of the latter into a psychological possession, allowing the film to pay homage to John Carpenters’ previous works while not acting as a carbon copy. Seeing someone like Corey become inspired by Michael could explain how monsters like Michael Myers can be born without ruining the mystery that John Carpenter sought to create with the character in the original.

While a direct relationship between Corey and Michael is yet to be confirmed, it would be interesting to see how Michael’s murderous 2018 rampage affected the youth of Haddonfield, especially with Allyson still in the mix. Regardless of the implications left on the story by Halloween Kills, the current details suggest this will be rectified and that Halloween Ends will correct mistakes left by its predecessor. With David Gordon Green describing Halloween Ends as a coming-of-age story, its hinted similarity to Christine would be the perfect opportunity to highlight the effects of Michael Myers on a young man’s psyche.
