One of Taylor Sheridan’s more recent Yellowstone spinoffs is finding massive success at the perfect time. The TV creator, producer and writer debuted Yellowstone in 2018, and the Western series aired for five seasons, to mostly critical acclaim. Sheridan then expanded the Yellowstone franchise with several spinoffs, including 1883, 1923, Marshals and Dutton Ranch, as well as other shows like Mayor of Kingstown, Tulsa King, Lioness, Landman and The Madison.
Marshals, the third spinoff in the franchise, debuted back in March and stars Luke Grimes as Kayce Dutton, a Navy SEAL-turned-livestock commissioner-turned U.S. Marshal. The series may have earned mixed reviews from critics, but it drew in record-breaking ratings for CBS during its first season. The network quickly moved ahead with a renewal, and Marshals season 2 just premiered on October 4.
Marshals Has Just Dethroned Another Sheridan Hit
With Marshals now back on the air, the Western has surged up Paramount+’s Top 10 TV shows chart, where it’s currently No. 2 in the United States, as of October 5. Marshals‘ sudden entrance into the Top 10 also came with another achievement, as it toppled another Sheridan series, Lioness, which is now No. 3 after its September 20 finale.
South Park holds the top spot on the streaming chart, with MobLand, NCIS, Everybody Loves Raymond, Criminal Minds, SpongeBob SquarePants, Tracker and Survivor rounding out the rest of the Top 10. Similar to Marshals, some of these shows are finding streaming success right now because they are currently airing new seasons, like South Park, MobLand, Tracker and Survivor.
Where Does Season 2 Pick Up The Yellowstone Spinoff?
The Marshals season 1 finale that aired in May was an action-packed episode that put several characters in danger. Rainwater came under threat, with Kayce helping him hide out at the ranch, but the attackers knew exactly where to look for him and began an ambush at East Camp. Cal and Belle’s lives were at risk as well after they got caught in the middle of a gunfight. Meanwhile, Kayce’s son, Tate, was taken by Tom Weaver, setting up an intense storyline for the current season.
In the just-aired Marshals season 2 premiere, Cal and Belle managed to survive, while Tom threatened Tate’s life in order to get Kayce to agree to give up East Camp. Kayce set out to save his son, which he successfully did before Jeb could drown Tate. Tom’s attempt to get away resulted in the death of his daughter, Dolly. With Tate now saved, Rainwater will finally be heading to Washington, DC, to testify before Congress.
Marshals airs Sundays at 8 p.m. EDT on CBS.
