    This week, we reflected on how reading feels like being transported to another destination, whether to a real-life location or to another place and time.

    After all, books do more than make us think and feel new things. They help us go places outside of our ordinary lives.

    A few years ago, I loved reading Tangerine, Christine Mangan’s psychological thriller. Set in 1950s Tangier during the waning days of French colonial rule, it follows an estranged friendship between two women, Alice and Lucy, amidst oppressive heat and a claustrophobic Moroccan backdrop. I felt the heat on every page. It has a “sun-drenched noir” vibe, where the bright, sunny exterior of Morocco hides a dark undercurrent. By the end of the book, it felt like I’d been there.

    The Island of Dreams - Caraval by Stephanie Garber - “It wouldn’t be the most relaxing destination, but it would be the most interesting. Here you can play exciting games of chance, follow clues, discover magical artifacts and experience the magical theatre that is Caraval.” —Kendall
    Copper Valley, Virginia - Irresistible Trouble by Pippa Grant - “I’d like to leave reality and spend a little time in Copper Valley. Not only is this city crawling with pro athletes and pop stars, but it has fantastic bakeries, museums and even more. I just hope I can get in some relaxation with all this recreation!” —JeriAnn
    The Castle of Otranto - The Castle of Otranto by Horace Walpole - “Perhaps not the sunniest and beachy-est place to vacation to, but I would love to step into the world of this gothic castle. With its dark, haunted passageways, at least I won’t have to worry about packing SPF!” —Lillian
