Anne Hathaway has taken the world by storm in 2026.
The Oscar-winning star’s career is diverse, with the best Hathaway movies including The Princess Diaries, The Devil Wears Prada, Interstellar, Brokeback Mountain, The Idea of You, Alice in Wonderland, and more. But it was clear from the start that this would be a particular year for Hathaway, with five theatrical movies slated to come out.
As she plays the significant role of Penelope in The Odyssey — with early predictions that she will be nominated or even win Best Supporting Actress at the 2027 Oscars — at least one of these movies is one of the highest-grossing of the year. But even the lowest-grossing of the five has turned out to be its own kind of success story.
Mother Mary Is HBO Max’s #1 Show Worldwide
Hathaway’s first movie of 2026, A24’s Mother Mary, hit theaters on April 17, 2026. Directed by David Lowery (The Green Knight, A Ghost Story), the phantasmic musical drama focuses on the titular pop star (Hathaway) who reunites with her estranged costume designer and friend (Michaela Coel) to have the latter design an ensemble for a comeback tour that will allow Mother Mary to reclaim herself.
Mother Mary‘s cast also includes Hunter Schafer and FKA twigs, with Jack Antoff and Charli XCX working on the soundtrack. Though it only grossed $3 million worldwide on a budget of $20 million, Mother Mary is now redeeming itself on HBO Max, as it is the no. 1 movie in the world on the platform, at the time of writing (per FlixPatrol). It outranks titles including Evil Dead Burn, The Secret Agent, The Northman, and Superbad.
Mother Mary Was The Start Of A Record-Breaking Year For Anne Hathaway
While it bombed at the box office, Mother Mary holds a Rotten Tomatoes score of 69% and kicked off a record-breaking year for the Les Misérables star. It was followed by The Devil Wears Prada 2 and The Odyssey, which each broke box office records in their own right: The former made The Devil Wears Prada a billion-dollar movie franchise, while the latter became the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time, among other accolades.

The Odyssey remains in theaters, months after its premiere, while two more movies starring Hathaway were released: The End of Oak Street and Verity. Neither were groundbreaking, but still contributed to Hathaway’s overall tally for the year. The appeal of The Devil Wears Prada 2 being a sequel, and Verity being based on a popular novel, also made her work a huge talking point this year.
Hathaway has thus crossed $2 billion at the worldwide box office in 2026. She has new projects in development now, including the long-gestating threequel in the Princess Diaries series. But few movies from her have been as weirdly ethereal as Mother Mary, thus it has earned this attention on streaming, when people still have multiple Hathaway movies to choose from in theaters.
Mother Mary, starring Anne Hathaway, is available to stream on HBO Max.
