Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige recently claimed Doctor Doom is Marvel’s most iconic villain…and he’s 100% right. One of the very first villains to appear in Marvel Comics, Doctor Doom started as a rival to The Fantastic Four when he first appeared in 1962’s The Fantastic Four #5. However, he’s since become a major household name who’s clashed with the vast majority of Marvel heroes.
At CinemaCon 2025 in Las Vegas, Kevin Feige shared a few details about the MCU’s Avengers: Doomsday, releasing next year in 2026:
“In ‘Doomsday,’ we’ve got the Avengers, Thunderbolts, Wakandans, Fantastic Four, and even the original X-Men. And they will all face off against Marvel’s most iconic villain, Doctor Doom, played by Robert Downey Jr.“
Considering the vast number of antagonists from the comics who’ve already made their mark on the MCU, to say that Doctor Doom is Marvel’s “most iconic” foe is a rather bold claim, regardless of Robert Downey Jr. having been cast as Victor von Doom. That said, there are so many reasons why Kevin Feige is absolutely right about Doctor Doom being Marvel’s most iconic villain, making him perfect for the next Avengers movie.

One of Doctor Doom’s greatest strengths is his brilliant mind and genius. Capable of creating all kinds of advanced technology and weaponry, Doctor Doom is an incredibly formidable foe who’s often backed by legions of Doombots. Likewise, his genius rivals the likes of Iron Man and Reed Richards, Marvel’s Smartest Man Alive. However, Doom himself would naturally claim that his genius is far superior to anyone else’s.

He Recently Stole The Title From Doctor Strange
Having spent his life studying sorcery as much as science, there aren’t very many heroes Doctor Doom can’t counter. Furthermore, Doctor Doom’s magical abilities are on par with the likes of Doctor Strange, so much so that recent comics have seen Doctor Doom as the Marvel Universe’s current Sorcerer Supreme, having deceived Strange into temporarily granting him the title and its connected power, only to keep the title once the danger Strange needed help with had passed.

Doctor Doom Has Wielded God-Like Powers

Doctor Doom has been known to claim immense god-like power more than once in the Marvel Comics timeline. Not only has he wielded Thor’s hammer, but Doom once stole the chaos magic of the Scarlet Witch and the cosmic power of Galactus, the World Devourer himself. In the alternate game timeline of Marvel Ultimate Alliance, Doom even stole the power of Odin as his own. However, one of the most impressive instances was when Doctor Doom claimed the powers of the Beyonders to save existence in 2015’s Secret Wars, making himself “God Emperor” over the new plane of reality known as Battleworld.

Doctor Doom Rules His Own Nation In Marvel Comics
The Eastern European Nation of Latveria
Doctor Doom is also the leader of the fictional Eastern European nation known as Latveria. Although he rules with an iron fist, the people of Latveria are well cared for and protected, and Doom is a fairly benevolent monarch so long as his subjects obey and bend the knee with absolute loyalty. The sovereign soil of Latveria is where Doctor Doom resides to plan his next moves to extend his authority beyond his nation and to the entire world at large.

Doctor Doom Has A Deeply Tragic Backstory
Beginning With His Mother’s Trapped Soul
Doctor Doom’s mother was a Romani gypsy who sold her soul in exchange for magical power. This led to her soul being trapped in Hell with the demon lord Mephisto for eternity. As a result, a young Victor von Doom dedicated his life to learning science and sorcery, determined to find a way to free his mother’s soul, making attempts to free her once every year on Midsummer’s Eve.
Note: With Doctor Strange’s help, Doom was eventually able to free his mother’s soul from Mephisto’s possession.
Likewise, another part of Doctor Doom’s tragic backstory has to do with his iconic metal mask. While Doctor Doom and Reed Richards’ Mister Fantastic were once college roommates, Doom came to blame Reed for an experiment that exploded and scarred Victor’s face. This led to Doom eventually donning his classic suit of armor and mask after spending time honing his skills and craft with a group of Tibetan monks, while also using his power to subsequently claim the throne of Latveria as its new dictator.

Mister Fantastic May Be Doom’s Personal Nemesis, But He’s A Threat To All Marvel Heroes
Especially In Modern Marvel Comics
Doctor Doom may despise Reed Richards and his family more than any other heroes in the Marvel Universe. However, Doom has since become far more than just a Fantastic Four villain in Marvel Comics. Over the years, Doctor Doom has effectively become a villain to the entire Marvel superhero community at large, a great reason why he’s the perfect foe for Avengers: Doomsday and all the various teams that will unite to try and stop him.

Doctor Doom Once Saved The Entire Multiverse
Creating Battleworld in 2015’s Secret Wars
While his methods may be ruthless, all Doctor Doom wants is the power to remake and improve the world as he believes it should be. As such, 2015’s Secret Wars allowed him to do just that when the entire multiverse began collapsing due to multiple incursions. With support from Doctor Strange, Molecule Man, and the power of the Beyonders, Doom was able to take multiple remnants of various realities and mash them all together, creating a patchwork plane of existence known as Battlworld.
Although Doom did make himself God Emperor and ruler of all, as previously mentioned, Victor still saved existence itself from being entirely wiped out. Objectively, it was a truly impressive feat in the comics and something that could similarly happen as the MCU’s Multiverse Saga is nearing its end with its own Secret Wars crossover after Doomsday. After all, incursions have been presented as a potential threat to the MCU’s 616 reality ever since the start of Phase 4.

Doctor Doom Has Brutally Killed Thanos Before
Proving Just How Before Doom Can Become
During his time as God Emperor in 2015’s Secret Wars, Doctor Doom was recklessly challenged by Thanos, who believed he was still Victor’s superior. However, Doctor Doom simply ripped out the Mad Titan’s skull and spine from his body with minimal effort, a testament to Doom’s ruthless power and potential proof that he too is capable of wielding immense cosmic power, whether it’s in the comics or the MCU, just like Thanos did when he wielded all six of the Infinity Stones.

Doctor Doom Can Easily Be Doomsday’s Protagonist
(Like Thanos in Infinity War)
One of the best things about the Russo Brothers’ Avengers: Infinity War was that Thanos and his quest for the Infinity Stones were very much the focus of the movie. Thanos was framed as the righteous protagonist seeking to balance the universe. Conversely, the Avengers were the obstacles and antagonists getting in his way.
In the same vein, Doctor Doom is just as capable of being that same type of MCU villain as well. Using the comics as a blueprint (specifically something like Secret Wars), Robert Downey Jr. could also lead Avengers: Doomsday as a “protagonist” with Doctor Doom’s desire to save the multiverse and existence itself, while still facing resistance from the Avengers and more MCU teams due to what could very well be a heavy cost said heroes are unwilling to pay.

Doom Always Thinks He’s Too Big To Fail
Doctor Doom’s biggest weakness is also a great reason why he’s so iconic. In essence, Doctor Doom always believes he’s too smart or too powerful to fail, every time. While it’s often a key reason why he gets as far as he does in the comics, his pride and ego are massive, and it almost always proves to be his downfall. As such, this is something that will hopefully be adapted for the MCU version of Doctor Doom as well when Avengers: Doomsday releases next year.
