Dwayne Johnson Movie Rules Again With .5M – The Hollywood Reporter

DC and Warner Bros.’ Black Adam stayed atop the weekend box office chart in its third outing with an estimated $18.5 million from 3,985 theaters for a domestic tally of $137.4 million through Sunday. Globally, the pic has jumped the $300 million mark.

Black Adam also dominated overseas, earning another $25.4 million from 76 markets for a foreign tally of $182.3 million and $319.7 million worldwide.

In North America, Black Adam fell 33 percent from last weekend and saw a better-than-expected bump on Saturday as more females turned out.

Starring Dwayne Johnson, Black Adam has had the advantage of facing little competition. That all changes next weekend when Marvel and Disney’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever launches in cinemas across the globe. Domestically, Wakanda Forever is tracking to debut at $175 million or more.

Black Adam, which is only the third film of 2022 to win the box office crown for three consecutive weekends, is having no trouble beating the weekend’s sole new wide offering, the Japanese anime movie One Piece Film: Red.

Red looks to open in second place with around $9.5 million from 2,410 locations, on the low end of expectations. Crunchyroll, a division of Sony, is handling One Piece Film: Red in the U.S. Crunchyroll’s recent hit Demon Slayer: Mugen Train opened to a far bigger $21 million domestically in late April 2022.

One Piece Film: Red earned an A CinemaScore from audiences, with males making up 76 percent of Friday ticket buyers. In terms of age, a whopping 75 percent of the audience was between ages 18-34.

Universal’s romantic comedy Ticket to Paradise placed third with $8.5 million from 4,066 cinemas — down just 13 percent from last weekend — for a domestic tally of $46.7 million and a romantic global cume of $137.2 million.

Paramount’s horror pic Smile continued to laugh loudly, beating new horror entries to come in No. 4 in North America with $4 million from 3,046 sites for a domestic total of nearly $100 million, or $99.1 million. Overseas, the $17 million movie has landed $103.8 million for an astonishing global haul of $202.9 million, making it one of the most profitable films of the year.

Lionsgate’s fellow horror offering Prey for the Devil fell to No. 5 in its second weekend, falling 46 percent to $3.9 million from 2,980 theaters for a domestic total of $13.6 million.

At the specialty box office, Searchlight’s The Banishees of Inisherin cracked the top 10 when expanding to a total of 895 theaters, grossing $2 million for a domestic total of $3 million. It has now amassed $7.2 million in the U.K. for a global total of $10.2 million.

MGM and UAR’s Till followed with $1.9 million for a total location count of 2,136 for a domestic total of $6.6 million. (The critically acclaimed film is only the third 2022 release to receive a coveted A+ CinemaScore from audiences after Top Gun: Maverick and The Woman King.)

James Gray’s Armageddon Time continued to struggle in its second weekend as it upped its cinema count to 1,006. The Focus Features release earned $810,000 for a 10-day total of $902,000.

Tár, also from Focus and now in its fifth weekend, grossed $670,000 from 1,090 theaters for a total of $3.7 million, a relatively solid showing for an arthouse title.

Nov. 6, 8:30 a.m. PT: Updated with numbers through Saturday and international box office.
