Moon Knight Costume Designer Reveals Incredible Jake Lockley Details

Moon Knight Costume Designer Reveals Incredible Jake Lockley Details

Moon Knight costume designer shares how she designed Jake Lockley to honor Moon Knight’s source material and Oscar Isaac’s inimitable performance.

Moon Knight costume designer Meghan Kasperlik reveals details regarding Jake Lockley that pay homage to the character and Oscar Isaac’s history. Marvel Studios’ series, which many hope gets a season 2, followed Isaac’s mild-mannered British “gift shoppist,” Steven Grant as he became aware of his Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) and alter in Marc Spector. Marc is a mercenary who made a life-saving pact with the moon god Khonshu. Throughout its six-episode season 1, Moon Knight did an astute and creative job of foreshadowing the arrival of a third personality.

In the pages of Marvel Comics, Marc serves as Moon Knight’s primary character with two alters: Steven and Jake Lockley. Lockley is a cab driver attuned to the criminal underworld (among other things). While comic book fans suspected Jake’s arrival in Moon Knight as it was repeatedly teased, the series didn’t introduce Jake to audiences until the finale’s post-credits scene. Following Marc and Steven’s denouncement of Khonshu, Arthur Harrow was thrown into a limo (with a license plate reading SPKTR), where the moon god revealed his new avatar is his flat-capped and violent driver, Jake. The scene ended as Jake executed Harrow and drove away. Despite being on screen for only 10 seconds, Jake’s appearance in Moon Knight is imbued with some impressive details.

Moon Knight costume designer Kasperlik recently took to Instagram and revealed her inspiration for Jake Lockley’s costume in the series; specifically, his collar. In addition to wanting Jake to have a silhouette similar to the comics, Kasperlik elaborated on how she riddled the character’s collar with “Mayan symbols mixed with ancient Egyptian” to honor Isaac’s Guatemalan heritage, and “important dates to the MCU and to Oscar.” Check out the post below:

These elements exemplify the admirable level of detail that goes into projects like Moon Knight. On top of Easter eggs concerning the larger MCU, Marvel Studios allows their creatives to experiment and put a lot of themselves into the work — something that has been praised by Moon Knight star Hawke. Piggybacking off of Kasperlik’s decision to include Isaac’s heritage in Jake’s costume, Isaac changed Moon Knight’s post-credits scene so that Jake would speak Spanish and completely distinguish himself from the other alters. Furthermore, Jake’s collar contains a tribute to not only Isaac, but also his brother, who served as his acting double during production.

The Moon Knight post-credits scene seemed to set up season 2, but Isaac’s contract doesn’t extend beyond season 1, and Moon Knight season 2 has not been confirmed. Still, it’s unlikely that’s the last MCU fans have seen of Steven, Marc, and Jake. As is the case with everything MCU, Moon Knight isn’t a direct adaptation of the comics. The series made Steven poor rather than a millionaire and Jake a limo driver rather than a cabbie. If and when they do return, there’s no telling what Moon Knight‘s future will hold or what awe-inspiring designs Kasperlik will think of next.
