26 DIY Christmas Decorations To Make in 2023

Decorating your home is fun any time of year, but there’s something special about decking the halls come December. The cozy season is well underway and there’s no better salve for the shorter, darker days than illuminating your home with candles and twinkly lights galore. And while I love nothing more than a good old browse-and-buy-everything-in-sight Target trip, there are more sustainable and affordable ways to up the festive ante. DIY Christmas decorations, anyone?

25 DIY Christmas Decorations to Bring the Festivity Home

When the final month of the year hits, you can catch me crafting ornaments, homemade gifts, and garlands of all stripes. As I type away, I have dried oranges cooling on the stovetop and just put up my ornamental stars in the windows. During this season of holiday markets, Christmas movie marathons, and abundant baking, it can be gratifying to contribute to the festivities with a little handmade, festive flair.

So let’s get to making that magic together. Below, I’m sharing my favorite DIY Christmas decorations that I found through my hours of Pinterest scrolling (please tell me you can relate). They span minimalist and maximalist aesthetics, traditional Scandinavian designs, and advent calendars you won’t believe you made yourself. Let the crafting begin!

Upcycled Velvet Christmas Trees from Creative Gen

Upcycled Velvet Christmas Trees from Collective Gen

This upcycled velvet Christmas tree DIY transforms fabric scraps into festive holiday decor. By using leftover velvet and a few simple tools, this project creates elegant, textured trees perfect for tabletops or mantels. It’s a sustainable, stylish way to bring cozy charm to your holiday decorations.

DIY Dried Orange Wreath from The Merrythought

Dried oranges are a holiday staple, and we love all of the many ways they can show up in your holiday decor. Take, for example, this sweet and simple wreath. It makes an aesthetic statement—while also showcasing the season’s biggest trend. Bows!

DIY Modern Advent Calendar - diy christmas decorations

DIY Modern Advent Calendar from Homey Oh My

Still don’t have your advent calendar up yet? Gather the minimal materials list and get crafting. This sweet little calendar lets you hide a small treat in each pouch. A piece of candy, a little loving note—anything! Let the season’s magic inspire you.

DIY Air Dry Clay Christmas Village from Alice & Lois

If your Pinterest feed looks anything like ours, then it’s likely filled with tons of white DIY Christmas villages. And while the majority look complex with all the cutting and glue, this one couldn’t be easier. Air-dry clay makes it happen.

3D Cardboard Stars from Collective Gen

This creative DIY is a brilliant way to use the (many) boxes that clutter our homes during the holiday season. It turns simple materials into stunning, geometric holiday decor. Using recycled cardboard, paint, and a few easy steps, you can craft stars perfect for hanging or tabletop displays. It’s an eco-friendly way to add festive charm to your home this season.

DIY Gold Wreath & Gold Garland by Sugar & Cloth

For a more formal, gilded look, go with this gold wreath and garland pairing. It adds such a lovely sparkle either indoors or out. The hardest part of this DIY Christmas decorating is braving the cold to spray the paint outside.

Heirloom Advent Calendar DIY - diy christmas decorations

Heirloom Advent Calendar DIY from A Beautiful Mess

Kiddos will delight in this stocking-filled advent calendar. The pastel stockings and unfinished wood give it a rustic, approachable look that adds so much character to any holiday set-up. This is a DIY that you’ll be sure to put up year after year.

Fluted Christmas Tree - diy christmas decorations

Fluted Christmas Tree from Collective Gen

If you’re skipping the real tree this year but don’t want to splurge on a faux option (they can be pricey!), go the DIY route. I love the Nordic vibe of this fluted tree that draws upon one of the year’s biggest design trends in a creative way. Are you ready for the secret to this gorgeous Christmas craft? Roller blinds!

DIY Colorful Christmas Village from Studio DIY

DIY Colorful Christmas Village from Studio DIY

DIY Christmas decorations add such a lovely, personal touch to your space. And while I didn’t grow up with a Christmas village, I love putting up this one each year. As someone who is drawn to bright and bold colors, I feel like this project was intended just for me.

DIY Christmas Table Wreath from Alice & Lois

You have a wreath on your front door, hanging in the hallway, placed above the mantel… but your table needs one, too! To fill in the gaps, this minimalist wreath makes the perfect centerpiece.

DIY Paper Bag Stars From The Merrythought

DIY Paper Bag Stars From The Merrythought

Paper bag stars are everywhere right now. I’d like to think it’s because they’re beautiful while also being incredibly easy to make. If you have a pack of paper bags, glue, scissors, a hole punch, and string, then you’re ready to go. Stars look beautiful hung in the windows or staggered together above the dining room table.

DIY Advent Calendar From Honestly WTF

DIY Advent Calendar From Honestly WTF

Beautiful advent calendars abound, but I can’t think of one more stunning than this. It’s bold but minimal, with pretty pops of jewel tones that perfectly reflect the holiday season. And with a short supply list, you have no excuses not to use some precious wall space on this calendar.

Gingerbread Salt Dough Ornaments from The Merrythought

Gingerbread Salt Dough Ornaments from The Merrythought

Confession: I’ve actually never made salt dough ornaments! I know they’re a Christmas classic, and with this DIY, I’m excited to join in on the fun. And how creative are these designs? They’re exactly the Scandinavian vibe I’m going for this year.

DIY Eucalyptus Garland From Homey Oh My

DIY Eucalyptus Garland From Homey Oh My

Take a break from the traditional garlands and opt for a little foliage. Eucalyptus smells fresh and piney and adds a small, soft layer of color to your space. If doing a major overhaul of your space feels overwhelming, focus on the simple details.

Dried Orange Garland From Call Me Cupcake

Dried Orange Garland From Call Me Cupcake

Dried orange garlands have risen in popularity over the past few years. They’re easy to make, celebrate the citrus of the season, and don’t require a dehydrator (yay!). Plus, they look stunning set against any string of greenery.

DIY Gingerbread House Gift Boxes From The House That Lars Built

DIY Gingerbread House Gift Boxes From The House That Lars Built

If you’re lacking skills in the gingerbread house-making department, this cardboard version is an easy and elegant solution. Annnd they double up as the cutest gift wrap (just in case you need to work on building up your finesse there as well).

DIY Minimal Wreath From A Daily Something

DIY Minimal Wreath From A Daily Something

If you’ve ever tried making a wreath before, you know that it takes both artistry and strength. Thankfully, minimal wreaths are trending. Simply string together some greenery, add a few floral embellishes, and you’re set.

DIY Botanical Clay Ornaments From Semi Stories

DIY Botanical Clay Ornaments From Semi Stories

If you love the look of handmade ceramics but want to make something a little less involved, oven-dry clay is an easy go-to. These are almost just like making cookies. Head outdoors for a nature walk and gather all the leaves and botanical bits to decorate your ornaments (bonus: they double as the most stunning gift toppers).

Dala Horse Ornaments & Gift Toppers From Frances et Moi

Dala Horse Ornaments & Gift Toppers From Frances et Moi

Dala horses are traditional carved wooden horses representing the Swedish province of Dalarna. With a Dala horse cookie cutter, polymer clay, and a permanent marker, you have all you need to whip out a bunch of these for ornaments, gift toppers, and presents for friends

DIY Hand Crochet Garland From The Merrythought

DIY Hand Crochet Garland From The Merrythought

Have you been wanting to get into crocheting? I’ve been intimidated to start, but this easy tutorial is a great way to begin. Pull up your favorite Christmas movie and get comfy on the couch. Oh, and you don’t even have to have needles—your hands work perfectly.

A-Frame Putz House Ornament From A Beautiful Mess

A-Frame Putz House Ornament From A Beautiful Mess

How sweet is this little home? Honestly, I’ve always dreamed of having an a-frame of my own in the woods, but this sweet guy will have to do. I’ll be stringing these up in my tree and have plans to share them with friends as well.

DIY Mini Hat Ornaments From Call Me Cupcake

DIY Mini Hat Ornaments From Call Me Cupcake

I started making these mini guys last month and I’ll confirm: I’m obsessed. They’re so much easier than they look and are adorable in the tree or lined up along your windows. They’d also be the sweetest gift topper.

DIY Giant Bow from Collective Gen

This DIY transforms a pillow into a show-stopping giant bow, perfect for holiday decor or unique gift wrapping. With just a few adjustments, your pillow takes on a festive, whimsical shape that will impress all of your guests. It’s an easy way to add charm and personality to your celebrations.
