When it comes to unforgettable moments, Robert doesn’t hesitate to recall one that still brings a smile to his face. “The most unforgettable moment was at CMA Fest when we were signing autographs at the meet and greet,” he recalls. “A fraternity brother that I had not seen in years hollers out my name, and I knew exactly who it was before I turned around. He made a point to come to my time slot to say hi… it meant the world to me! I had not seen him in about 25 years. Then also, just connecting with folks at the event.” He adds with a grin, “Nothing is better than meeting fans and connecting with them.” It’s a humble outlook that defines Eskridge’s career — one that began long before the bright lights of Nashville ever shone on him.
Robert’s journey began in the hills of Kentucky, where his love of music took root at an early age. “I got my first guitar when I was six years old — an old Stratocaster and a Fender Vibrochamp, and I still have the amp,” he says with pride. “Playing in Eastern Kentucky with a bluegrass gospel band was my first real performance — I was about 15 years old. Then, in college, I played in a few bands, and when I graduated, we won one of the local talent shows and got to open for Tim McGraw. I had been working in various clubs in Nashville and traveling down there a few times a month, passing out artist packs with bios and cassettes. I then landed a gig playing at Gilley’s at the top of Music Row, and it morphed into a midnight slot at Ernest Tubb Record Shop and then into a stint with the George Jones Band at the old Stockyard and Bullpen Lounge.”
He laughs as he recalls a twist of fate that nearly linked him to one of country music’s legendary groups. “The label I was working with had another group of guys — The Tennessee River Boys — who went on to change their name to Diamond Rio! I love to write and perform, and from there, I just continued.”
When asked who influenced his musical style, Eskridge doesn’t have to think long. “Merle, Hank Sr. and Jr., Johnny Cash, Billy Joel, AC/DC, Garth Brooks, Keith Whitley, Alan Jackson… I think each of them probably gave me a nugget or two that I use in my writing and performances.” Those influences blend seamlessly in his sound — a perfect mix of traditional country storytelling and classic rock soul that gives his music both edge and emotion.
So, what makes a country song truly timeless? For Robert Eskridge, the answer is simple: heart, honesty, and connection. That’s something fans will hear loud and clear in his upcoming music. “I have a new album that is finished, but we’re releasing it one single at a time,” he shares. One of the most personal tracks, ‘If Heaven Had a Phone,’ was written in memory of his late father. “I spoke to him every day, and after he passed, I just felt empty. I still have my mom and make a point to talk to her daily as well, but if Heaven did have a phone, I’d call him. This one will connect on a lot of levels with people dealing with losses.”
Beyond heartfelt lyrics, Eskridge’s work has earned him recognition across the country scene, including nominations at the Josie Music Awards and other prestigious honors. For Robert, these milestones are both humbling and motivating. “I would say that they definitely help to validate that you’re on the right track. Knowing that peers and other professionals see that you’re putting in the time and work to continually improve the craft and put out good products helps you stay driven and focused,” he says. Still, he remains grounded in what truly matters. “I never did music for the money to start with, so having some of those recognitions really means the world to me.”
Robert and his band, Robert Eskridge and Southern Daze, have also brought their talent to the big screen. They are featured performing in several scenes of the upcoming Hallmark Movie “Win, Place, Love,” directed by Hailey Duff and John Schneider. “I’m especially proud to be a member of the CMA,” Eskridge shares. “Continuing to play out — whether at large shows or small honky-tonks — country music is in my DNA.”
